From the Department of Cardiovascular Surgery of Yeni Yüzyıl University Gaziosmanpaşa Hospital, Dr. While giving information about varicose veins and treatment methods, Lecturer Oğuz Konukoğlu stated that although its effect on increasing leg varicose is not known, varicose patients with Covid are more likely to have venous occlusion, since they have a higher probability of thrombosis. What does itchy varicose veins mean? How do patients with varicose veins have complaints? Which veins have varicose veins? Do varicose veins cause health problems? Does having COVID increase varicose veins?

It is the disease of the veins (veins) that carry the dirty blood in our body. The pressure inside the veins increases due to the defects in the structure of the vessel wall or the loss of function of the valves that prevent the back flow of blood in the veins. As a result, the veins expand and deform over time. To define it roughly, it is called venous insufficiency when the veins leak blood back, and varicose veins when the veins become prominent.

How do patients with varicose veins have complaints?

Patients with varicose veins have complaints such as itching, pain, cramps, feeling of tension and pressure in the leg, edema, deterioration of the leg appearance and color change due to the increase in varicose veins. In general, these complaints are usually between the ankle and knee and increase with standing.

Who is it more common in?

It is more common in occupational groups (teachers, waiters, security guards, health workers) who spend their days standing up. The incidence of varicose veins increases with age and during pregnancy in those with a genetic predisposition.

More rarely, varicose veins can be seen in intra-abdominal vein occlusions or in case of mass compression.

Which veins have varicose veins?

Capillary Veins are veins that are 1-2 mm below the skin and do not exceed 1-2 mm in thickness. They usually give local findings and do not cause serious health problems. They can be treated with sclerotherapy, laser or RF (Radiofrequency) applications from the skin.

Superficial veins are the VSM (Vena saphenous magna) and VSP (Vena saphenous parva) veins that run 1-2 cm below the skin. In the disease, worm-sausage-shaped swellings are seen under the skin with a thickness of 0.5-2 cm. They can cause swelling, pain, tension and cramping in the leg. They can be treated with open surgery and endovenous laser or RF applications.

Deep veins, on the other hand, collect most of the blood of the limbs and show a course close to the center, that is, deep. They are invisible. In the disease, they affect the entire leg. They can be treated with open surgery.

Do varicose veins cause health problems?

Varicose veins create visual disturbances in the first periods. However, in later periods, severe pain in the leg area and inflammation of the vein may occur. In more advanced cases, darkening of the leg color and open sores are seen. In fact, there may be problems such as rupture and bleeding of the varicose and clotting in the lungs with the formation of a clot in the varicose.

Does having COVID increase varicose veins?

Although it is not known that Covid disease has a direct aggravating effect on leg varicose veins, it is known that the probability of thrombosis (clot) and occlusion increases in these patients. Since the probability of thrombosis is higher in patients with varicose veins, it can be said that the probability of vein occlusion is higher in patients with varicose veins who have had COVID.

What does itchy varicose veins mean?

Itching of varicose veins is usually seen when thinning and discoloration of the skin occurs. This may indicate that varicose veins are clinically advanced. Itching of varicose veins on thinned skin can cause serious bleeding in the leg.
