By preparing the Strategy for Living in Harmony with Nature, the foundations of many exemplary projects for Turkey were laid in order to increase the green infrastructure and green spaces in the city. The amount of investments made by the Izmir Metropolitan Municipality for the environment in two years has exceeded 5,5 billion liras.
Our priority is nature

We saw that the only way to be resistant to disasters and epidemics is to live a life in harmony with nature. We carry out many studies that reduce energy consumption and focus on renewable energy sources. We are working hard to protect the right to life of people and all other living things in our city.”
Establishing a life in harmony with nature in İzmir
Izmir Metropolitan Municipality, which is the first and only municipality in Turkey to accept green infrastructure as an infrastructure issue, has implemented two important studies titled İzmir Green City Action Plan (İzmir YŞEP) and Sustainable Energy and Climate Action Plan (İzmir SECAP) in this direction. It also published İzmir's Strategy for Living in Harmony with Nature, which covers all these studies. İzmir's Living in Harmony with Nature Strategy draws the roadmap for İzmir by 2030, aiming to build a circular city that is resistant to natural disasters, has high welfare and at the same time preserves its biological diversity.

Rainwater investments were focused on to clean the Gulf and make it swimmable. 72 kilometers of separation completed. Construction of a 62-kilometer-long stormwater line in Buca, Bornova and Konak districts has begun. Declaring 2021 as the year of rainwater separation, İZSU will build 133 kilometers of rainwater lines and 120 kilometers of rainwater main collector channels throughout the year. Kemeraltı's infrastructure is being renewed with an investment of 200 million liras.
Leading city in purification
İzmir Metropolitan Municipality, which ranks first in Turkey with the number of treatments in European Union standards and the amount of wastewater treatment per capita, has put into service its advanced biological wastewater treatment plant in Foça Gerenköy. Work on advanced biological wastewater treatment plants continues in Kemalpaşa Ulucak and Mordoğan. A total of 10 million 776 thousand cubic meters of biogas and 7 thousand 534 tons of dried sludge were obtained in Çiğli Wastewater Treatment Plant Sludge Digestion Unit and used as additional fuel in cement factories. Bayraklı, KarşıyakaOdor removal systems were installed in , Çiğli and Customs Wastewater Pumping Stations.
Healthy and plentiful water
Especially the surrounding settlements got the healthy and uninterrupted water they needed. A total of 605 kilometers of drinking water network lines and 346 kilometers of branch lines were renewed. 129 new boreholes were drilled and alternative water sources were offered to the citizens of the city. The production of 103 boreholes continues. Drinking water treatment plant investment was made in Çandarlı, Foça and Bornova districts. Construction of Kavaklıdere Drinking Water Treatment Plant was completed. İZSU General Directorate invested over 1 billion liras for a healthy infrastructure and environment in two years.

Izmir Metropolitan Municipality, which follows a sustainable and environmentally friendly transportation policy in order to reduce carbon emissions in the city against the global climate crisis, has made historical breakthroughs in rail system investments in the last two years. With an investment of 414 million liras, the production works of Çiğli Tram have started. With an investment of 2 billion, the Narlıdere Metro construction has been completed at a rate of 75 percent. The tender process has started for the construction of the Buca Metro, which will be the biggest investment in İzmir history with a budget of 10 billion liras. With an investment of 136 million 880 thousand liras, Fethi Sekin and Uğur Mumcu ferries, which are environmentally friendly and suitable for disabled use, were put into service and sea transportation was strengthened. One third of the bus fleet has been renewed. The largest single-item bus tender in the country was signed, and with an investment of 647 million liras, 364 buses were purchased, 4 of which were environmentally friendly, with green engines, and 451 of which were designed to transport disabled citizens.
ESHOT will supply all its energy needs from solar panels
In order to meet all of ESHOT's electricity needs from the sun, photovoltaic panels that generate electricity from solar energy will be installed on the roofs of the Çiğli Ataşehir and Buca Adatepe facilities, in the second phase of the GES in Gediz Atölye, to produce 4 million 260 thousand kilowatt-hours of electrical energy annually. Thus, 62 percent of the annual energy needed will be provided from the sun. Thanks to the GES installed in the Gediz Workshop in 2020, 2 tons of carbon dioxide emissions were prevented. 155 bus stops throughout the city started to be illuminated by installing solar power plants (GES). This number will be increased to 65. For all these works, 225 million TL will be spent.

In Ödemiş and Bergama solid waste integrated facilities, which were built with an investment of 446 million liras, electrical energy to meet the electricity needs of 174 thousand households and 162 tons of fertilizer will be produced per day. 60 decares of land was rehabilitated and afforested within the scope of efforts to transform landfills into urban forests in Harmandalı. The Menemen Medical Waste Sterilization Facility, where 20 tons of medical waste is processed daily, was put into service with an investment of 45 million liras. With an investment of 20.6 million liras, a green-focused, European-standard rehabilitation and adoption center for street animals in Bornova Gökdere will be put into service in the fall.
Izmir set an example in bicycle transportation
Adopting an environmentally friendly, economical and sustainable transportation policy against the global climate crisis, Izmir Metropolitan Municipality has implemented many infrastructure, application and incentive projects in the last two years to reduce motorized transportation and increase bicycle and pedestrian transportation in the city. New bike paths were built; The number of BISIM stations increased to 55 and the number of bicycles serving to 890. While tandem and children's bicycles were included in the fleet, İzmir set an example for Turkey in bicycle transportation with free bicycle repair stations and practices that encourage the use of bicycles in public transportation.

İzmir Agriculture inspires Turkey
With the Izmir Agriculture model, Izmir Metropolitan Municipality aims to develop rural development on the basis of cooperatives, to use water resources efficiently with correct agricultural practices, and to transform the city into a world brand in agriculture. The local seed karakılçık wheat, which was on the verge of disappearing in the last two years, met again with the fertile lands of İzmir. Production of climate-friendly fodder plants started. Native seeds and native animal breeds were highlighted. Can Yücel Seed Center was opened. İzmir Agriculture Development Center was established in Sasalı, where the society will be informed about the drought that may occur in the future due to climate change, and the right methods in agriculture will be explained with application greenhouses. 8.4 million was spent for the center from the metropolitan budget. The project for the collection of pesticide packaging waste, which poses serious threats to the environment and public health, started in Menderes.
Healing the wounds of the forest fire
In 2019, the Forest İzmir Campaign was launched and 1 million 570 thousand TL was collected in order to eliminate the destruction of nature caused by the great fire that caused thousands of hectares of forest area to be ash within the borders of Seferihisar, Menderes and Karabağlar districts. 121 thousand 599 fire resistant saplings and 2 containers were provided. Planting of seedlings has begun. Over 5 thousand fire-resistant saplings have been planted in the Devil Creek, Evka-18 and Menderes Değirmendere İZSU afforestation areas. 60 trailers were purchased and 30 percent of each trailer was donated by the Forest İzmir campaign. Planting of saplings has also started for every child born in İzmir. Vermicompost was distributed to 408 producers in Menderes and Seferihisar. In line with the Forest İzmir Campaign, the construction of a special nursery in Torbalı, where trees resistant to climate and fire are grown, continues.
Living parks are coming
The Metropolitan is implementing 35 “Living Parks” projects, which are among the most important goals of the Forest İzmir campaign, where the citizens of İzmir will integrate with nature and forests. Many different areas such as Yelki Olivelo, Gediz Delta, Yamanlar Mountain and Flamingo Nature Park, Meles Valley were determined for the 35 Living Parks to be established on the IzMiras excursion route, and planning studies for each area were started.

Five different routes were determined to connect all the park areas of İzmir with each other and the natural areas of the city through green corridors. In this context, the Northern Route (Bostanlı-Yamanlar Valley), Southern Route (Kültürpark-Meles-Kaynaklar Village), Eastern Route (Yeşilova-Smyrna), Northwest Route (Bostanlı-Gediz Delta) and Southwestern Route (İnciraltı Urban Forest-Yelki Olivelo) were determined. . An “uninterrupted ecological corridor” has been created on the coastal part of the creek and on the route of Halk Park and the following. The metropolitan has spent 7.7 million liras for the arrangement. An official candidacy application has been made for the Gediz Delta of Izmir, one of the largest wetland ecosystems in the Mediterranean Basin, to be included in the UNESCO World Natural Heritage List.
For “A Greener Izmir”

A new green area of 799 thousand square meters was added to the city. Menemen and Çiğli Esentepe parks came into service with an investment of 5 million liras. Renovated with an investment of 17.3 million liras, Dr. Behçet Uz Recreation Area will be put into service in September. With the Orange Valley, the construction of which started with an investment of 26.6 million liras in the Buca Tınaztape District, the 200 thousand square meter area is transformed into an ecological city park where the citizens of İzmir will breathe in the city with sports, health and cultural activities. The İnciraltı Therapy Center project is being implemented in an area of 55 thousand square meters in order to bring the citizens together with the natural environment. Planting of aromatic plants continues to transform Kadifekale into an urban forest. Instead of exotic plant species in the green areas of the city, the natural flora of the Mediterranean and İzmir Region is used entirely. By planting natural flora in the parks and gardens, the living creatures in the region are drawn into the city and the green areas in the city are provided to function as an ecosystem.
New afforestation areas are being created
As an extension of the Forest İzmir campaign, new afforestation areas in İzmir were determined.
