With the cooperation of the Ministry of Family and Social Services, General Directorate of Services for the Disabled and Elderly, Aydın Adnan Menderes University, Manisa Celal Bayar University and Turkey Barrier-Free Informatics Platform, the Accessible Libraries Workshop lasted for 28 days between 29-2021 May 2 with a limited number of participants in the conference hall of Aydın Adnan Menderes University. carried out.

In the workshop, exemplary studies, suggestions and duties of institutions in the field of accessible libraries were determined.

Accessibility standards prepared

Speaking on behalf of our Minister of Family and Social Services, Mr. Derya Yanık, General Manager of Disabled and Elderly Services Uzm. Dr. Orhan Koç, within the scope of accessibility, buildings open to public use; He stated that accessibility standards have been prepared to make open areas such as pavements, pedestrian crossings, parks, public transportation vehicles and information and communication systems accessible.

Koç stated that serious studies have been carried out on the accessibility of services for disabled people in the last 15 years, and that the law for the disabled with 1500 articles was created for the first time in Turkey.

Noting that the Accessibility Monitoring and Inspection Commissions are working on making buildings such as public buildings and hospitals accessible to people with disabilities in every province, Koç said that, in addition to its explanatory texts, the Accessibility Guide, in which architectural drawings are supported by three-dimensional visuals, has been published. He noted that the work was expedited.

Koç also said that the Accessibility Evaluation Module (ERDEM), which enables self-assessment to make buildings accessible, has been implemented.

Accessibility Awards are given

Koç aims to announce to the public its projects, practices and services that contribute to the participation of disabled people in social and economic life and to benefit from public services; He stated that Accessibility Awards were given in order to encourage the increase of studies in the field of accessibility, and many similar services and studies were implemented.

Emphasizing the importance of early diagnosis and intervention and the education of disabled people, Koç emphasized the distance education of disabled students during the Covid-19 pandemic, and had educational videos prepared for students and teachers, which are introductory to Turkish Sign Language, in cooperation with the Ministry of National Education, and the related videos within the distance education program were displayed on EBA TV. He pointed out that it was published on eba.gov.tr.

On the other hand, the Rector of Manisa Celal Bayar University, who is the secretariat of the Turkey Accessible Informatics Platform, Prof. Dr. Ahmet Ataç and the host Aydın Adnan Menderes University Rector Prof. Dr. Osman Selçuk Aldemir also gave a speech at the opening of the workshop, expressing their work on accessibility at their universities.

Academicians working in the field, heads of universities with disabilities, librarians across Turkey and educators working in the field of information-document management contributed to the Workshop, which was attended by approximately 100 people.

On the first day of the two-day Workshop held at Aydın Adnan Menderes University, nine presentations were made in two panel sessions on “Accessible Library Studies”. On the second day of the workshop, an evaluation meeting was held after the online session on “Accessible Library Studies in Turkey” and the workshop ended.
