Experts draw attention to the serious loss of motivation in children entering adolescence, and warn parents about the symptoms that can be seen. Specialist Clinical Psychologist Seda Aydoğdu from Üsküdar University NP Feneryolu Medical Center gave information and made recommendations about the lack of motivation in children.

The goal should be determined according to the characteristics of the child

Clinical Psychologist Seda Aydoğdu stated that the expectations of the child from himself or the family from the child may seem too big and difficult for the individual to achieve, and continued as follows: “Failure to set goals according to the characteristics of the child is one of the reasons that reduce the child's motivation and self-confidence. The child should know his / her strengths and weaknesses, and mothers and fathers should be aware of these aspects. If the child or family sets high goals where weaknesses predominate, this will again cause low motivation. If he does not receive positive feedback from his family or teachers for every task he completes, if he is constantly criticized, if his mistakes and deficiencies are always in the foreground, a lack of motivation can be seen in the child. This situation also appears as low academic success, lack of self-confidence and negative self-belief in the long term ”.

There is a loss of motivation in adolescence

Seda Aydoğdu stated that there is a serious low level of motivation especially in adolescents and said, “Many mothers and fathers have expressed that they have difficulties in fulfilling the duties and responsibilities expected of him in the home environment, that they are not cheerful, act slower and become lazy compared to the past. One of the reasons for this situation is entering a new period of development. They focus on developing a new identity for themselves, their friendships are more prominent and often seek answers to existential questions. This situation can be completed with the formation of an identity by the child, ”he said.

Feedback is important to motivation

Aydoğdu said that it is easier for children who are in pre-adolescence to reach the targeted behavior especially with external motivation and continued his words as follows: It is possible to prevent this lack of motivation by giving positive feedback such as "Well done, you did it, I am proud of you, you deserve a star" . The most important issue that should not be forgotten is that the targeted behavior or acquisition is related to the interests of the child. "The child should be guided by an internal motivation in a way that he is interested and curious otherwise, no matter how well we say to a child who is afraid altogether, well done, the child will not be able to achieve the desired success in activities with a ball in it."

Motivation occurs in different forms and levels

Stating that the concept of motivation is a personal concept, it emerges in different ways and levels in every child, Seda Aydoğdu said, “For this reason, families should try to learn the interests of their children first. If the targeted behavior is planned in line with the child's interests, it will be easier to reach the desired point. If your child's lack of motivation is a situation that develops later; The awareness of both the family and the child should be increased about what situations and events occur as a result. Thus, if the definition of the problem and its causes are determined, the necessary internal and external motivation studies can be carried out for a solution ”.

It is very important to increase the intrinsic motivation

Stating that it is possible to have a positive effect on children's learning performances by increasing intrinsic motivation and to maintain this effect in the long term, Seda Aydoğdu, an expert clinical psychologist, said, “For this reason, the targeted behavior should be shaped according to the child's interests and controlled with a follow-up chart. "The source of external motivation should be supported by giving positive feedback to the child through the follow-up schedule. Also, attention should be paid to the eating, drinking and sleeping patterns of the children, and if there is an irregularity, work should be done to correct this situation."
