In the current "closure period" in Turkey, the works in the construction site of the Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant (NGS), which is the first nuclear power plant of the country, continue on a regular basis.
According to Article 29 of the "List of Places and Persons Exempt from Curfews" of the "Circular on Total Closure Measures" of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, which will last from April 2021, 17 until May 2021, 7 and covers the country, "production and manufacturing facilities and construction activities and those working at these locations ”are within the scope of the exception.
Akkuyu NGS is a strategically important international project and today employs approximately 11 thousand people. Akkuyu NPP will ensure the energy stability and prosperity of both the region and the country by generating up to 35 billion kilowatt hours of electricity annually with the commissioning of all four power units.
Studies at Akkuyu NGS have been continuing non-stop since the beginning of the coronavirus epidemic. An operation center was established at the construction site, taking timely measures against the epidemic and ensuring the successful implementation of the project in accordance with the nuclear power plant construction schedule. Project participants endeavor to complete the construction of the first unit of Akkuyu NPP by 100, the 2023th anniversary of the foundation of the Republic of Turkey. At the same time, ensuring compliance with safety standards continues to be the most important priority of the project.
Since the beginning of the pandemic, all necessary precautions against the epidemic have been taken at the Akkuyu NGS construction site and an intensified medical surveillance regime has been implemented. All employees are regularly tested for Covid-19 and personal protective equipment is provided. Daily temperature measurements are made, common areas and working facilities are equipped with antiseptic dispensers. Accommodation and office buildings are also regularly disinfected, and restrictions are imposed on the organization of meetings and public events.
