Garbage and waste concept is changing in İzmir

İzmir Metropolitan Municipality Mayor, who stated that they put forth a full will for İzmir to be a clean and compatible city with nature. Tunç Soyer“The concept of garbage and waste now has to change in our city. In the new era, we do not see garbage as a waste. We consider it as an economic resource. The whole world now uses garbage as raw material. We have started to create a new cyclical understanding in İzmir, from the collection of garbage to its disposal.”

We produce electricity and fertilizers from garbage

Stating that İzmir has two ends of the garbage separation cycle, one of them is solid waste separation and storage investments, the other is the collection of garbage from where it is located.
“We started to generate electrical energy from the wastes stored in Harmandalı Regular Solid Waste Storage Facility. With the Biogas Plant here, we eliminate approximately 100 million cubic meters of methane per year and generate 200 million kilowatt hours of electricity. This amount corresponds to the energy use of 100 thousand households. With the solid waste management facilities we set up in Ödemiş and Bergama, we both solve the solid waste problem of Küçük Menderes and Bakırçay basins and start to produce electricity and fertilizers from waste. Our production started in Bergama Integrated Solid Waste Management Facility with 800 tons of waste processing capacity per day and Ödemiş Integrated Solid Waste Management Facility with a waste processing capacity of 600 tons per day. Our Harmandalı, Bergama and Ödemiş waste disposal facilities have now started to turn the city's waste into energy and fertilizer. According to our legislation, the responsibility of collecting garbage from the streets and neighborhoods belongs to our district municipalities. We decided to support our district municipalities in collecting garbage from neighborhoods in order to make İzmir a very clean city. We distributed 6 thousand garbage containers to our district municipalities in order to strengthen the cleaning infrastructure of our city. This year we will distribute 6 thousand more containers ”.

Grant package for 28 vehicles to Buca

Stating that Buca is one of the districts that they prioritize regarding the waste management system with its population ratio, Soyer said, “We provide huge equipment support to the district in order to enable them to fulfill the difficult and important task in this regard even better. The total cost of the 28-vehicle support package is 23 million 500 thousand TL. It consists of 23 garbage trucks, 3 rubble trucks and 2 road sweeping vehicles. I know very well that every penny of this investment we make will return to our city in terms of health and prosperity. Nature is the clearest mirror of man. If he is sick, we are also sick. If he's good, we're fine too. The pandemic has once again shown us the following fact: We cannot live a healthy life on the other side while ruining the health of nature on one side. For this reason, we put forward a full will for Izmir to be a clean and harmonious city. I would like to thank the district municipalities that worked with us as we walked towards our goal. Good luck to our Bucam and Bucalı brothers! "
