What you need to know about electric cars

Today, the energy required for transportation around the world is largely provided by fossil fuels. However, the uncontrolled use of fossil fuels is among the factors that make it difficult to apply sustainable and nature-friendly living principles. Therefore, interest in electric cars has increased significantly, especially in the last 20-30 years. Do not be fooled by the increased interest in electric cars in the recent past. In fact, the emergence of electric vehicles on the stage of history dates back to the 1800s. How Did Electric Vehicles Emerge? How Do Electric Cars Work? How To Charge Electric Cars What Are The Advantages Of Using Electric Cars?

How Did Electric Vehicles Emerge?

"Who was the first electric car invented?" The answer to the question has not been answered clearly today. However, we can say that the history of electric vehicles goes back to 1828. In 1828, an inventor named Anyos Jedlik developed an electric motor powerful enough to start a small car. An electric car suitable for carrying passengers was invented by Robert Anderson in the 1830s. However, to manufacture an electric car, besides the electric motor, a rechargeable battery is also needed. Invented by Gaston Plante in 1865, the battery is the starting point of electric cars used today.

The inventions made raise the thoughts that the 1900s will be the golden age of electric vehicles. Likewise, in this period, electric vehicles start to attract more attention compared to gasoline-powered vehicles. However, in 1908, Henry Ford's introduction of the Model T gasoline car and putting it into mass production changes all the dynamics in the automobile market.

Gasoline vehicles, which are less costly than electric vehicles due to their mass production, come to the fore by dominating the market. When the calendar shows the year 1970 and problems such as air pollution and climate problems begin to appear in the world, electric vehicles come to the fore again because of their environmental friendliness and fuel saving opportunities. Investments in electric vehicles are started to be supported and in 1997 the world's first mass-produced hybrid car is introduced. Today, a significant number of automobile manufacturers have introduced electric vehicle models to the market.

How Do Electric Cars Work?

Electric vehicles run on energy from electricity, not fossil fuels. There is a part called the rotor inside the electric motor used in vehicles. The rotation of the rotor converts electrical energy into motion energy. In electric vehicles, the engine does not need to reach a certain speed in order to obtain torque power. Vehicles have batteries created using lithium-ion batteries. Internal combustion engines using fossil fuels generate high noise and heat, while the engine of electric vehicles runs quietly.

The performance of electric vehicles can be faster than gasoline cars thanks to the energy efficiency of the engines used in the vehicles. The acceleration capacity of electric vehicles is determined depending on the vehicle model, battery power, engine and weight.

How to Charge Electric Cars?

The lithium-ion type batteries used in the battery of electric vehicles are similar to the battery batteries found in mobile phones. Just like mobile phones, electric vehicles can be charged via sockets that provide alternating current. In other words, you can charge your electric vehicle using the standard sockets in your home. However, the use of low-ampere and single-phase systems in the electrical installations in homes may cause the charging time of electric vehicles to reach 10-12 hours.

Thanks to the high current hosted by electric car charging stations, it is possible to shorten the said period. The vast majority of electric cars used today can reach 30% battery charge within approximately 80 minutes at established charging stations.

What Are The Advantages Of Using Electric Cars?

Electric vehicles provide significant environmental and economic advantages. In general, it is possible to say that electric vehicles reduce the fuel cost by one fifth compared to gasoline vehicles. The longer duration of electric vehicles to require service repairs also relieves users in terms of maintenance costs. The most important cost item of electric cars arises when the battery used in vehicles needs to be replaced when its life is over.

It is of great importance for the protection of the environment that electric vehicles do not provide energy from fossil fuels and do not use an exhaust system. The carbon emissions created by gasoline vehicles are among the main factors that trigger global warming. On the other hand, efforts to provide reserves from fossil fuels lead to the destruction of nature. It is predicted that the widespread use of electric vehicles will significantly reduce the level of carbon emissions in the atmosphere. Thanks to their environmentally friendly designs, electric vehicles are produced using advanced technological equipment and offer a quiet operating experience. In this way, it plays an important role in preventing noise pollution.

Especially since 2015, it is possible to see that large automobile companies in the world have concentrated their efforts on electric vehicles. Although sales of electric cars are still low in Turkey, it is thought that the market will become more active in the near future.
