Police Chief Mohamad Zainal Abdullah stated that the accident occurred at around 20.45 local time, and after the repair, an empty subway collided head-on with another subway with 213 passengers on the same line. Abdullah stated that the accident occurred in the underground tunnel about 100 meters away from the KLCC station outside Petronas Towers, and that 47 people were seriously injured and 166 people were slightly injured in the accident.
The authorities stated that an investigation was initiated about the incident and stated that they suspected that the cause of the accident might have occurred as a result of miscommunication at the operation control center.
Transport Minister Wee Ka Siong, on the other hand, stated that the accident was the first major accident in the 23-year operation of the subway system and promised a comprehensive investigation.
