In line with the vision of Tunç Soyer, Mayor of Izmir Metropolitan Municipality, who strengthened the goal of Engelsizmir with the understanding of "Another Disabled Policy Is Possible", preparations for the establishment of the Parent Education and Information Center were accelerated.
İzmir Metropolitan Municipality continues its preparations to establish the Parent Education and Information Center within the Awareness Center in Limontepe to meet the educational needs of parents with disabilities. The center, which will be established in line with the vision of Tunç Soyer, Mayor of Izmir Metropolitan Municipality, strengthening the goal of Engelsizmir with the understanding of "Another Disabled Policy Is Possible", will constitute the first example of specialized parent centers, which have many ideal examples in developed countries, adapted to the needs of families in our country. The center aims to help parents get appropriate education and services for their children with disabilities, improve children's educational outcomes, inform parents and professionals, and create a link between children with disabilities and resources that meet their needs.
There are no examples of a disability policy in Turkey
İzmir Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Tunç Soyer said that the vision of Engelsizmir and the understanding of "Another Disability Policy is Possible" create a very comprehensive field of study and said, "Developing the vocational education and employment model of the mentally disabled individuals, with the Parent Education and Information Center, the decision-maker for the children of the families of the disabled individuals. To ensure that disabled people participate in artistic activities without competing, to reveal the first examples of the Sensory Parks planned to be established in the city, the more organized work of our awareness centers, The Visually Impaired Awareness Museum, which is located in the new awareness center established in Örnekköy and will be among the firsts in the world. We are working towards many goals such as the completion of the project, the establishment of a Mobile Awareness Center, and the provision of project support from the Awareness Center Scientific Committee to both the metropolitan and other municipalities of the city. The development of the 'Red Flag' application that Izmir Metropolitan Municipality gives to the open and closed spaces of private or public institutions and transportation vehicles that are made suitable for the access of disabled individuals is among our works within this scope, ”he said.
"It will be the first place that comes to mind"
Engelsizmir Executive Board Chairman Dr. Levent Köstem said that the Parent Education and Information Center will be built in a structure that will come to the mind of every citizen who meets with disability in Izmir and will make them feel safe. Levent Köstem said, “The aim is to reduce the loneliness and difficulties of disabled people and their families. Because parents who have to make decisions for their children and often cannot have a say in the decisions taken, unfortunately, are alone from the moment they meet with disability. A family with a disability is running out of time, energy and financial resources, and after a while the needs of other members of the family may become unmet. Their lifestyles change radically, they give up their dreams and plans for the future. Social life is disrupted because time, money, and energy to spare for them are reduced. Parents of children with disabilities have to cope with a number of additional challenges to secure their children's right to education. In some cases, conflict with schools and other service providers becomes a source of great strain for them. In all this confusion, we observe that support systems designed for families are inadequate and not well run. “Unfortunately, families have no say anywhere in the services and applications offered to them,” he said.
What will be done at the center?
Organizing education programs and workshops specially designed for the family in the Parent Education and Information Center, conducting vocational training and employment studies with job coaching for children and young people with disabilities, holding Individualized Education Program (BEP) meetings, online learning activities and programs, video modules, web conducting mobile service activities that include activities such as preparing seminars, helping in accessing resources and preparing printed publications, electronic bulletins, encouraging change in society with various projects and activities, consulting family members at home and classroom teachers at schools, following adaptation efforts to increase student success. is planned.
