According to the latest studies, statin group drugs used to reduce the level of cholesterol in the blood reduce the incidence of colon cancer.

Statin group drugs are among the most commonly used drugs for cholesterol control all over the world, Anadolu Medical Center Medical Oncology Specialist Prof. Dr. Serdar Turhal said, “There are uncertain observations that this group of drugs reduce the occurrence of different cancers such as liver cancer, breast cancer, stomach cancer, pancreatic cancer, and gallbladder cancer. However, the suppressive effect of these drugs on cancer development is thought to be through the RAS gene ”.

Anadolu Medical Center Medical Oncology Specialist Prof. Dr. Serdar Turhal said, “Different drugs have been used in these patients to prevent this cancer. There are studies on the effects of pain medications, blood pressure medications, vitamin D and diabetes medications on reducing the occurrence of colon cancer. Aspirin, the most promising of these, could not be put into routine use, as it increased the risk of bleeding. "Research with others did not give a definitive result," he said.

Statin group drugs reduce the risk of colon cancer by 60 percent

In a study reported in 2014, Medical Oncology Specialist Prof. Dr. Serdar Turhal said, “In the updated publication reported from New York, 40 separate studies were reviewed and the effect on a total of 9 individuals was observed. Of these, 52 were taking statin drugs, and 11.459.306 were not. In this group, it was observed that the risk of colon cancer in those using statins was 2.123.293 percent lower than those who did not. In 9.336.013 patients with inflammatory bowel disease, 20 were using statins, 17.528 were not, and it was observed that the use of statins reduced the risk of colon cancer by 1.994 percent in these patients. As a result, a strong observation has been made that statin group drugs reduce the occurrence of colon cancer, especially in people with inflammatory bowel disease, and this is expected to be confirmed by comparative studies.
