Thousands of leeches were seized by the Customs Enforcement Team of the Ministry of Commerce during the controls at Sabiha Gökçen Airport.

As a result of the data analysis of the Customs Enforcement teams, a foreign passenger who was deemed to be at risk was taken into custody at Sabiha Gökçen Airport. The luggage to be loaded on the plane to Kyrgyzstan Manas Airport was first scanned by x-ray machine and then opened. An extraordinary movement was detected in the cloth bags in the suitcase.

When the damp bags were opened, it was understood that there were thousands of living leeches inside. Leeches weighing approximately 6 kilograms, which are subject to permission to be taken abroad without permission and have not submitted any documents, were delivered to the officials of the Provincial Directorate of Agriculture and Forestry, pursuant to the international agreement titled "Convention on the Trade of Endangered Species" (CITES).

An investigation was launched against those responsible.
