In the region where Turkey, with the aim of protecting biodiversity, ecosystem integrity is targeted to reach 2023 percent of all protected areas of the country's surface until 17.
In this context, conservation areas consisting of natural protected areas, special environmental protection zones, national parks, nature parks, nature protection areas, nature monuments, wildlife development areas and wetlands have been increased from 2 percent to 9 percent in the last 10,03 years. .
With the studies carried out by the Ministry, the number of protected areas, which was 2019 thousand 3 in 186, increased to 3 thousand 534 as of February this year.
As of February of this year, the number of natural protected areas reached 2 thousand 676, the number of national parks 45, the number of nature parks 248, the number of registered monumental trees to 9 thousand 205, and the number of registered caves to 265.
Among the declared protected areas are Seyfe Lake located in Mucur district of Kırşehir, known as bird paradise, and Kumköy, which is on the border of Aksu and Serik districts of Antalya, which is the breeding ground for turtles.
Protection and monitoring projects are carried out in protected areas
In accordance with international conventions to which the Ministry is a party, studies are carried out to protect and monitor the species and habitats that are threatened and endangered.
Within this scope, the protection and monitoring of sea turtles in the special environmental protection areas of Patara, Fethiye-Göcek, Belek, Göksu Delta, Köyceğiz-Dalyan, protection and monitoring of bird species such as flamingos living in wetlands in the Tuz Gölü Special Environmental Protection Area, Love Flower conservation and monitoring projects continue.
As a result of the monitoring conducted by the Ministry in 2019, it was determined that approximately 2020 thousand flamingo babies hatched in the Tuz Gölü Special Environmental Protection Area in 19.
The decrease in coastal use due to the Kovid-19 outbreak also doubled the number of sea turtles. While a total of 5 caretta caretta cubs reached the sea in 2019 from the 93 Special Environmental Protection Area beaches, this number increased to 857 in 2020.
In the Mogan Lake bottom mud cleaning project, 2016 million cubic meters of sludge screening was carried out between 2018-3.
