The wax sculptures symbolizing the historical moment at the Tobacco Pier, where Gazi Mustafa Kemal Atatürk and his 18 comrades first set foot in Samsun, were taken into care. Samsun Metropolitan Municipality teams also replace the damaged wooden parts of the pier with new ones. Maintenance and repair work will be completed by May 19.

Maintenance and repair work was started at the Tobacco Pier, where Gazi Mustafa Kemal Atatürk first set foot in Samsun on May 19, 1919. In the work initiated by the Metropolitan Municipality, decaying wooden parts were removed. The floor of the pier, whose floor is reinforced with iron profiles, was re-covered with wood.

It was opened to visitors on May 19, 2008 and opened to tourism. kazanThe Metropolitan Municipality, which renewed the pier 13 years later, is also repairing the wax statues of Gazi Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, his comrades-in-arms, which symbolizes the first steps of the national struggle. The sculptures, which were dismantled and taken to the art workshop in the Machinery Supply Department, are undergoing extensive maintenance here. The accessories of the sculptures, whose broken, cracked and deformed parts are repaired, are also renewed.

The wax sculptures of Chief Inspector Captain Cevat Abbas Gürer, Headquarters Commander Captain Mustafa Vasfı Süsoy, Inspection Commanding Officer Captain Ali Şevket Öndersev and Deputy Head of Inspection Health Department Medical Major Refik Saydam were repaired and placed in their place. Repair of Veteran Mustafa Kemal Atatürk and other wax sculptures continues.

Samsun Metropolitan Municipality Machinery Supply Department Wood Workshop Responsible Ergin Karatekin said that they have carried out the repairs of the decaying tree and floor platforms on the historical tobacco pier due to the weather conditions. Karatekin said, “There are deformities on the floor of the tobacco pier. We are repairing our floor covering that is worn out from the rain, the sun. After the repair is over, the wood protector will be shot and our tobacco pier will be restored. I hope it will not be damaged for a long time. "We will complete the maintenance and repair work until May 19," he said.

Sculptor Sercan Saygı, who is responsible for the restoration of the wax sculptures, said, “We bring the deformed wax sculptures of Gazi Mustafa Kemal Atatürk and his comrades on the tobacco pier and are welcomed, and repair cracks, sun-yellowed parts, broken hair and mustache. We make all of his epaulets, buttons, belts and gun holsters from scratch here. The restoration of a statue takes about a week, including the research phase. Then, after correcting the deficiencies and painting, we restore it to its original state and mount it. Even repairing the statue of Veteran Mustafa Kemal Atatürk is exciting. It is as if we are experiencing that moment with very different emotions. Touching them gives a different pleasure. We do our job fondly, ”he said.
