In the pandemic, smart city investments were put on the table again in the world. Experts predict that by 2025, over $ 326 billion will be invested in smart city infrastructure worldwide. It is estimated that the number of IoT devices worldwide will exceed 2025 billion devices by 75.

Canovate Group CMO Erdem Günay, who noted that the investments in logistics, education, health and security have gained momentum due to the pandemic for the sustainability of the daily life and economic life of the urbanites, said:

“Recently, applications such as thermal thermometers placed at the entrances of public transportation areas, popularization of digital communication platforms, virtual health consultancy, control sensors installed to control the number of people entering public living areas and pedestrian crossings are smart city applications that have increased in density with the pandemic. 1,3 million people migrate to cities every day in the world, and it is predicted that 2025% of the world's population will live in cities by 65. Today, when the number of population living in cities is increasing rapidly, and especially during the pandemic, serious urban problems such as traffic, pollution, energy consumption and waste increase have made 'smart city' investments inevitable for city administrations. In summary, Internet of Things (IoT) devices, 5G technology, fiber optic infrastructures and micro data centers that support smart city technologies are very close to us and will penetrate our lives more deeply with each passing day. As 5G technology is important for the Internet of Things (IoT), fiber optic infrastructure and micro data centers are as important for the spread of 5G technology. Experts predict that by 2025, close to $ 326 billion will be invested in smart city infrastructure worldwide. It is stated that the number of IoT devices worldwide will exceed 2025 billion devices by 75 ”.

"Fiber optic infrastructure and micro data centers" are critical for the efficient operation of IoT systems.

Canovate Group CMO Erdem Günay, who explained that technology and digital transformation affect every aspect of our lives while making smart city projects a part of this great transformation, continued his speech as follows:
“Our world, where technology is developing so rapidly, is turning into a completely digital state and the power of the internet becomes the main source of all these technologies to operate effectively. In such a world, fiber optic infrastructures will soon become indispensable for smart cities and smart buildings. In our daily life, the ability of objects to connect to the internet and send and receive data depends entirely on internet speed, bandwidth and fast data communication. Another issue is that when configuring smart cities, the raw data from IoT devices is so large that transmitting this data as it is over a network will put a huge burden on network resources and increase costs. Therefore, 'frontier computing / computing at the edge' will enter our lives in smart city planning. Edge computing means the processing of raw data in a micro data center close to the data source and transferring only the necessary and meaningful information to the main data center or to the cloud. For example, it will not transmit every data from a thermal radar, but only data where the temperature exceeds a certain level to the headquarters. In this sense, a correct structuring will reduce the data size and delays in transfer by up to 95%. "At this point reached thanks to artificial intelligence, micro data centers that take up less space and modular are very critical for IoT systems to work more efficiently in smart cities."
