Russian army will finish railway construction in siberia

Due to economic difficulties and labor shortages, Russia intends to utilize military units in railway construction in Siberia. A memorandum of understanding was signed between the Ministry of Defense and the RJD on the subject. In the statement made by the company, it was stated that the army units will work in the modernization of the Baikal-Amur and Transsiberia lines.

Reporting on the subject, Lenta portal writes that the RJD is having difficulties in completing its modernization efforts due to the economic crisis. The size of the investment loss in the period 2020-2021 due to the crisis is calculated as 550 billion rubles, or 7,4 billion dollars. It is estimated that this loss will double by 2025.

Russia wants to modernize the Baikal-Amur and Transsiberia lines and increase the cargo carrying capacity of the lines in order to take advantage of the commercial potential of the ports and border gates in the far east of the country.

The Lenta portal reminds us that during the Soviet Union period, inmates from GULAG labor camps, as well as railway troops and students, were employed in the construction of the Baikal-Amur line.
