The process of closing home, which entered our lives with the pandemic, has highlighted e-commerce more than ever. Cybercriminals aim to deceive people through SMS (text messages) they create. By clicking on the fake shipping notifications they send to their mobile phones, they try to gain access to the credentials of users and to scam them with false promises.

Cyber security organization ESET pointed out the deceptive SMS sent for fraudulent purposes.

We do a lot of online shopping these days and delivery notifications can get mixed up. Following the shopping, first text messages containing information about the shipments and then notifications about cargo deliveries come. Sometimes, even if we do not expect any delivery from the cargo, fraudsters offer such convincing links or offers that we click on the link and ask for more information.

They pretend to be a cargo company

ESET researchers have recently noticed an increase in SMS phishing (also known as smishing) scams from so-called shipping companies.

Cyber fraudsters aim to click the link on their victims with such messages. Scammers who are great at manipulation are constantly improving themselves. They are developing new techniques to get people to do what they want without giving them a second thought. Many people have started taking precautions against these emails as they are used to the email phishing method. However, SMS phishing messages are not on the agenda that much. Therefore, criminals can use these messages to their advantage.

Don't rush to click

Examining the escalating threats, ESET researcher Jake Moore warned: The frequency of these messages and the creativity in the messages are increasing. Think again when there are messages that are meant to scare you, claim to offer a big discount, and ask you to act right away. Messages that affect your emotions manipulate you without realizing it. Do not rush to click. Check the sender information, consider whether an offer will come from a courier company. Don't be fooled by tempting offers that won't happen. Do not share your personal information that can be used in banking transactions, your passwords and passwords, and your credit card information.
