Working with the vision of providing a cleaner and sustainable environment to future generations, İzmir Metropolitan Municipality has completed the İzmir Green City Action Plan and İzmir Sustainable Energy and Climate Action Plan. Determining 61 actions in both plans, Büyükşehir has drawn the road map of İzmir until 2030 regarding climate and other environmental issues.

Izmir Metropolitan Municipality has completed the "Green City Action Plan" and "Sustainable Energy and Climate Action Plan", which it started with the aim of presenting a sustainable environment to future generations. İzmir was the first city in Turkey to be included in the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) Green Cities Program.

The Metropolitan Municipality harmonized the strategies and actions of the two complementary plans. In both plans, 61 actions were taken in the sectors of land use, waste management, buildings, environment and biodiversity, energy, public health, civil defense and emergency, water management, agriculture and forestry, tourism and transportation.

Aiming to make İzmir resilient by adapting to the impacts of the climate crisis with these two action plans, İzmir Metropolitan Municipality renewed its commitment to reduce greenhouse gases by 2020 percent by 20 as “reducing greenhouse gases by 2019 percent by 2030” in 40 with the decision of the parliament.

Metropolitan contributes to the reduction of greenhouse gases

İzmir Metropolitan Municipality contributes to the reduction of greenhouse gases with environmental investments such as renewable energy investments, development of the rail system in transportation, bicycle and pedestrian roads, and obtaining electrical energy from waste. Solar power plant was installed in Ekrem Akurgal Life Park, ESHOT Gediz Workshop, Selçuk Solid Waste Transfer Station, Seyrek Dog Shelter, Aliağa Fire Department, Bergama Slaughterhouse, Uzundere Multi-Purpose Hall and Çiğli Family Information Center buildings.

The Metropolitan also took important steps towards generating electricity from methane from waste areas. Harmandalı Regular Waste Storage and Biogas Facility in Çiğli both eliminates the methane gas generated and meets the electricity needs of approximately 110 thousand households annually. The capacity of the facility is planned to be increased to approximately 40 MWe. In addition, electricity is obtained by biomethanization method in the Ödemiş Integrated Solid Waste Management Facility and the Bergama Solid Waste Management Facility, and fertilizers are also obtained from organic waste.
