Ömer Şerif (Omar Sharif, April 10, 1932 - July 10, 2015) The famous Lebanese Egyptian actress who won the Golden Globe Award. Her family migrated from the Lebanese city of Zahle in the early 20th century.

Ömer Şerif was born on April 10, 1932 in Alexandria with the name Michel Demitri Chalhoub. He started cinema in 1953 with the Egyptian movie "Sira` Fi al-Wadi". He then starred in major Hollywood productions such as Lawrence of Arabia and Doctor Zhivago. He has appeared in about 100 movies.

Speaking fluently in Arabic, English, French, Spanish and Italian, the Sheriff has often appeared in foreign roles. He bridged travel restrictions imposed by the Egyptian president Gamal Abdel Nasser's government and led him to exile in Europe. He was a lifelong horse racing enthusiast and was once among the world's best contract bridge players.

He died of a heart attack on 10 July 2015 at the age of 83.

Early life

He graduated from Cairo University with a degree in mathematics and physics. He worked in his father's precious woodworking business for a while before starting his acting career in Egypt. In 1955, Michel changed his name to Omar Sharif and converted to Islam in 1954 to marry Egyptian actress Fatin Hamama.

It is widely reported that Sharif studied acting at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London, but the academy has confirmed to Al Jazeera that this is not true.
