Stating that the coronavirus crisis, which has effects around the world, has given important messages to humanity, Psychiatrist Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan points out that the pandemic is changing global trends.

Üsküdar University Founding Rector, Psychiatrist Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan drew attention to the important effects of the coronavirus epidemic, which is felt all over the world, especially psychological problems. Stating that the psychological effects of coronavirus are felt quite widely, Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan said, “There are two processes here, the first is the difficulties experienced by those who have caught coronavirus infection and have had it heavy. Another said, "There are concerns and fears about catching the pandemic."

50% of society has matured, 50% felt fear and anxiety

Üsküdar University last year after the pandemic began in April Koronafob Turkey drew attention to the research carried out across Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan said, “6 thousand 318 people participated in this study. We discussed the perceptions, anxieties, fears and maturation process regarding the coronavirus. The six questions in the post-tram growth scale were relevant to the group in which we were working. Approximately 50 percent of the participants who were positively affected by the pandemic answered the questions such as 'I know the value of what I have', 'My priorities in life have changed', 'I treat my relatives differently, I can improve myself better in empathy'. However, we saw that fear and panic continued in 50 percent of the group. This is a serious figure in society. "50 percent had matured in terms of post-traumatic growth."

We need cautious optimism

Noting that the e-coronophobia website prepared by Üsküdar University and NPİSTANBUL Brain Hospital is the most visited website after the Ministry of Health, Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan said, “Visits to this page have started to decrease for the last two months. We see this as a positive development. People's anxiety and fear began to decrease in this regard. This is especially about the emergence of hope after vaccination. Such a decrease occurred last summer, but it had a negative impact. People also loosened the measures and the second attack was more violent. Therefore, we need cautious optimism against this decrease right now, ”he said.

Stating that the pandemic process negatively affected psychiatric patients, Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan said, “There are no long queues in front of psychiatry clinics, but it has started. Currently, many people who have become stable in treatment, especially Alzheimer's patients, bipolar patients, have become decompensated. Their illnesses relapsed and hospitalizations increased. Although there is fear during hospital admissions, we see that psychiatric clinics have increased. This fact not only in Turkey, we can say that this is a situation seen all over the world. "There was also a warning from the World Health Organization that the epidemic of postpandemic psychiatric disease should be taken into account."

No place for despair

Noting that there is absolutely no place for despair in the fight against pandemic, Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan said, “The end of the tunnel is visible. With the vaccine, this will be resolved somehow. Maybe it will be slow, maybe it will be late, it will be resolved sooner or later. There is absolutely no need for despair for him. When we look at the history of the world, there have been such epidemics. Later, over the years, when the majority of the society gained immunity, the situation returned to normal. The pandemic will come to the state of influenza after a while, this disease is like flu viruses. But this is a much more interesting disease. It mutates frequently, it is not clear who will get it from where. "It is a disease that surprises the immune system."

Must be physical distance, not emotional

Noting that precautions and warnings must be followed while combating the pandemic, Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan said, “The most important issue against the virus is definitely the mask. The concept of social distance when saying no social contact was misunderstood. It was understood as psychological distance, not social distance. People moved away from each other. We can keep social and physical distance away by maintaining our emotional distance and psychological distance. Therefore, we don't have to call our relatives. We can call, call by phone, even in digital environment, we can ask the sake of family elders. This process does not prevent us from taking care of our children. "It does not prevent them from saying a good word and a loving glance."

We will not live rough like before

Stating that paying attention to three points while tackling the pandemic will reduce fear and anxiety, Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan said, “The first is the absence of despair, the second is to increase the psychological contact even if we maintain physical distance. The third is to continue with classical measures. Anyone who pays attention to the precautions need not be afraid. We say there is stress, no fear. Controllable stress is beneficial. We will control the stress, but we will change our lifestyle compared to the past. We will not be able to live roughly as before, we will not be able to pursue pleasure and speed, we will change our lifestyle. Those who have an entertainment-oriented life philosophy are now at great risk, ”he said.

All humanity should take global pollution seriously

Stating that the pandemic is changing global trends, Prof. Dr. Noting that all humanity should take climate changes and environmental problems seriously after this process, Nevzat Tarhan said:

“Globally, supply and demand will seriously affect the economy. The pandemic will affect our relationship with nature. People have to admit their inability, weakness, and weakness in the face of the pandemic. Medicine progressed that far, but could not find a cure for everything. This virus ends, another virus starts. Because we treated nature very roughly, we behaved badly. There is no guarantee that I will not get another virus from another animal. Therefore, everyone has to be environmentalist. Everyone will respect the environment. Everyone has to take the global pollution and climate changes in the world seriously. We will see those who do not accept them and harm society. Perhaps in the next decades, non-environmentalists will be considered a crime. This has to be done now. Currently, a non-environmentalist is committing a global crime, a crime against humanity. We have to think like that. For this we need to learn this lesson. If we don't change global normals, we will be committing a crime against humanity. It's that serious. "

We will try to manage Covid-19

Stating that psychological resilience is important when combating the pandemic, Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan, noting that adaptation to the new era will be effective in overcoming this process easily, completed his words as follows:

"We will not see Covid-19 as an enemy. We will not confront him, but we will try to manage it. There are third generation treatments in psychiatry. Treatments to acknowledge and manage the problem or disease. We will admit this problem. This is now our companion. He will live with us. If we can control it, we will spend our lives more efficiently. This is our pick. It will be in our best interest if we make the right choice of style, accept the new lifestyle, the new normal. A person who thinks short-term and says if I can not have fun today, let me live according to my head passes covidently, but pays at least the price of a relative. Intelligent people are people who think medium and long term. People please improve their long-term thinking skills. ”
