Mayor of Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Tunç SoyerIn line with its vision of “Another Agriculture is Possible”, it continues to work side by side with the producer to implement its domestic and national agricultural policy. President Soyer, who announced the “Izmir Agriculture” strategy in Ödemiş last week, signed a product purchase agreement with 28 agricultural development cooperatives in order to support agricultural production, which is one of the important links of this strategy. İzmir Deputy Kani Beko, CHP Party Council Member Devrim Barış Çelik, Güzelbahçe Mayor Mustafa İnce, Gaziemir Mayor Halil Arda, Seferihisar Deputy Mayor Yelda Celiloğlu, CHP Konak District President Osman Çağrı attended the product purchase agreement ceremony held at Ahmed Adnan Saygun Art Center. Metropolitan, which purchased over 2020 million lira from producer cooperatives in 144, will continue to purchase nearly 2021 products such as saplings, honey, flowers, cheese, olive oil from agricultural development cooperatives, which make significant contributions to the sustainability of agricultural production in the city with its strong solidarity model and production capacity.

"Izmir Agriculture" will be inspired to Turkey

Speaking at the ceremony, Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Tunç Soyer, gave information about the İzmir Agriculture strategy, which consists of six stages, which will fight against “drought” and “poverty”, which it announced during the Küçük Menderes Basin tour last week. Stating that they aim to reduce 77 percent of the water used in agriculture by 50 percent, Mayor Soyer said, “We started to implement this strategy from the Küçük Menderes Basin. Because there is a threat of drought in this basin. The underground reserve is 290 cubic meters. We draw 900 cubic meters of water. We draw water 3 times our underground source. We will conserve water resources by changing the product pattern. We present a concrete example of a policy that will inspire not only Izmir but also all of Turkey against drought. We do not see agriculture as an agricultural activity that starts and ends only in the field. İzmir Agriculture covers a whole process with its logistics, packaging, processing of products, branding, sales, export, R&D and training activities. Thus, we fight poverty and increase welfare.”

Almost all of our purchases are from cooperatives.

Stating that they will continue to support cooperatives with purchase guaranteed contracts, President Soyer continued his speech as follows: “We are proud to fulfill our purchase guarantee promise we give to the producers, which has a very important place in the Six-legged Izmir Agriculture strategy, with the contracts we will make with our cooperatives. Here, we reinforce our cooperation with our 28 producer cooperatives; We continue to support our producers by purchasing nearly 40 products such as saplings, flowers, honey, cheese, olive oil, figs, tarhana and lavender from our producers. While the total amount of purchases we made in 2019 was 125 million 377 thousand Turkish Liras, the portion of this purchased from Izmir cooperatives is 121 million 447 thousand liras. In 2020, we purchased a total of 144 million 762 thousand 472 liras. We will increase this in 2021 ”.

Product purchases will increase by 2 times

Giving the good news that the municipal company Baysan will make contracted purchases with cooperatives in the planting of waterless fodder plants and cereals on 10 thousand decares of land, “The value of the amount of feed we will buy is approximately 15 million TL. In other purchases we will make on a basin scale, I am saying that we will only buy 100 tons of chestnuts from Beydağ, 300 tons of potatoes from Ödemiş, and 200 tons of tomato paste from Bayındır. I will continue to explain the other products and the amount we will purchase at each new basin visit. I would like to announce here that we aim to make a purchase of 2021 million lira by more than doubling the purchase of 2022 million lira from cooperatives in 2020 and 144 in 338. 154 million lira of these purchases correspond to dairy products, 97 million lira to meat products, 15 million to feed plants and the remaining 72 million to other products ”.

Called out to the villagers

"Another Agriculture is possible 'that they built with the logic of Izmir agriculture strategy, starting from Izmir to build an entire local and national agricultural economy in Turkey that the factors that make a project to show that it is possible expresses Soyer said. “For this, it is among the top priorities for us to support our producers and to ensure that they are fed in the place where they were born by paying for their labor. Because if our farmer does not get what he deserves and does not receive support, the fertile lands inherited to us become unproductive and agriculture in our country collapses completely. Indeed, official figures went the last 20 years clearly shows that agriculture shrinks to go in Turkey. With the Metropolitan Law enacted in 2012, a total of 16 thousand 220 villages were closed. At that time, we raised our voices so that the villages would not be closed. We said 'Villages will come'. Finally, it came to the fore to transform these places into rural neighborhoods. Here I am calling out to all our villagers and mukhtars: Come and make your applications for rural neighborhood status. Our villages should continue their lives as villages again. At the time, due to the law, the goods obtained by the cooperation of our villagers had to be disposed of. "

We have to succeed

Saying that İzmir Metropolitan Municipality will continue to work for İzmir Agriculture until it makes us say “The villager is the lord of the nation”, Soyer completed his speech as follows: “I would like to say this to our cooperative chairmen and managers here. We have to be successful; you have to be successful. This is not just a matter of your cooperative. This is a country issue. It is our duty to change what you complain about in this country. We start this from agriculture. 'We'll show all of Turkey's possible that another agriculture. We will be successful for him. We will produce more. Izmir Metropolitan Municipality will protect our producers and cooperatives to the end. "
