In the study conducted in the USA, the world's leading academics, non-governmental organizations and implant manufacturers came together to demonstrate the important steps to be taken in the wider use of cochlear implants that can provide full hearing in patients with total hearing loss.

According to the data shared after the study, it was stated that only 20 out of every 1 adults who could benefit from a cochlear implant had a cochlear implant.

Speaking about the Consensus Study, Istanbul University Cerrahpaşa Faculty of Health Sciences Audiology Department Lecturer Dr. Eyüp Kara gave information about the cochlear implant and the importance of the treatment process.

Lack of information about the treatment process for adults with hearing loss prevents many patients from taking advantage of this opportunity. With the widespread use of cochlear implant products in congenital or subsequent hearing loss, it is possible for more patients to hear healthily, while low awareness causes less people to benefit from this opportunity.

Istanbul University Cerrahpaşa Faculty of Health Sciences Audiology Department Lecturer Dr. Eyüp Kara stated that many steps have been taken to raise awareness about new technological solutions in the field of hearing health. Kara, scientists, non-governmental organizations and implant technology manufacturers who come together in the USA with the aim of enabling more people around the world to benefit from cochlear implant technology and to raise awareness, publishing an impartial and objective International Consensus Document, enabling more individuals with hearing loss to benefit from implant technologies all over the world. He said that he has signed a common road map on the steps to be taken in the direction of

The International Delphi Consensus Document covers seven categories in the healthcare field. Awareness level, treatment application processes, surgical techniques, clinical efficacy, post-application results, relationship between hearing loss and depression, dementia, cognition and cost effectiveness.

Stating that the Delphi Consensus Document was also published in the JAMA Journal of Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery, Kara stated that it is a great loss for patients that only 20 out of every 1 people who can benefit from cochlear implant is a user today. Kara continued: “The Delphi Consensus Document provided clear guidelines and steps to identify best practices for the assessment and management of patients with moderate to severe or severe sensorineural hearing loss. These steps have resulted in an international and up-to-date guideline for diagnosis, treatment and aftercare for cochlear implants so that patients can achieve optimum hearing outcome and have the best quality of life. ”

"Cochlear implant in Turkey and rehabilitation services are reimbursed by the state"

Dr. Eyüp Kara pointed out that cochlear implants, which are produced using innovative technologies in congenital or developing losses in childhood and adulthood, provide a clear hearing and 8 times stronger perception than other solutions. Stating that hearing impairment is no longer a problem, thanks to cochlear implant applications performed at the right time and post-application rehabilitation programs in eligible patients, Kara added that with the state reimbursement, the surgery and rehabilitation expenses of the patients are covered.

Stating that the physician should be consulted immediately after the occurrence of hearing loss for a cochlear implant solution, thus increasing the success of the treatment, Kara continued as follows: '' Cochlear implant applications performed at the right time in suitable patients and a rehabilitation program that is followed correctly after the application offers a healthy life for the individual. For example; We can promise a smooth life in terms of speech, cognitive abilities, academic success and social adaptation in congenital severe / total hearing loss, in applications performed up to the age of one. After the development of hearing loss in adults, if it is not late and the application is made without losing the competence of the hearing center in the brain, we get extremely successful / pleasing results. ''

"Our goal is to create solutions for hearing impairment, to make participation in life and productivity sustainable"

Pointing out that there are 53 million hearing-impaired patients in the world today, Kara said, “Enabling those who can benefit from treatment among these patients to access this form of treatment supported by new technologies will support millions of individuals to participate in life as healthy individuals and their productivity”. Kara added: “It is possible for individuals who can achieve both social and academic success to live happily and healthily. With increasing global awareness on this issue, more individuals will be aware of solutions. With this feature, the International Consensus Study has been an important project that can initiate a new era in the solution of hearing impairment. "
