BTK has approved the extension of IMM's current internet frequency, which will expire at the end of the year, until the end of 2021. IMM SözcüSü Murat Ongun thanked BTK from social media. Istanbulites will also benefit from the free IMM WiFi service for another year while traveling. In addition, millions of pounds of public funds were not wasted.

Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM) sent two separate petitions to the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure Information Technologies and Communication Authority (BTK) on 2021 November and 30 December to extend the frequency lease term until the end of 21 in order to continue to provide WiFi service. .

BTK made a statement on social media tonight and announced that the frequency period of IMM was extended until the end of 2021, and made Istanbulites happy.

In the statement, “The permission of the frequencies given to İBB affiliate İSTTELKOM AŞ for trial purposes has been extended until December 31, 2021. Until this date, necessary investments have been requested to prevent our citizens from suffering ”.

IMM SözcüSü Murat Ongun thanked this statement on Twitter. Ongun said, "Thank you to BTK for giving frequency approval until December 31, 2021, for the free internet service we provide on our metrobus line."

İBB Information Technologies Department and İSTTELKOM will continue the necessary investments and services uninterruptedly, as before, in order to continue the internet services provided in Istanbul, especially İBB WiFi, which has 4 million subscribers.

THE FREQUENCY WAS ALLOCATED IN 2018

The frequency, which is vital for WiFi services to continue without interruption, was allocated to IMM by BTK in 2018. Using the existing frequency, IMM established a total of 44 base stations and 41 hand terminals, 85 on the Yenikapı - Hacıosman Metro and 335 on the metrobus line.

In case the frequency time is not extended; IMM WiFi service used by 4 million citizens would be cut off in public transportation vehicles such as metrobus. The approval given was also very important in terms of not wasting millions of lira of public investment, together with the infrastructure ready for internet use in the subways. Due to the Covid -19 epidemic that shook the whole world, it did not seem possible to make all these investments quickly.

During the epidemic process, the fact that IMM's services were not interrupted and Istanbul residents continued to benefit from free internet service was considered by the IMM Administration as a good development that will strengthen public trust.
