Brain fog, which has come to the fore quite often recently, is not referred to as a disease in medicine, but it is necessary to pay attention to its symptoms and effects. Noting that brain fog occurs with symptoms such as attention deficit, decreased memory power, sleep disturbance and inability to think properly, experts warn by stating that this disorder may actually be a harbinger of other diseases.

Üsküdar University NPİSTANBUL Brain Hospital Neurology Specialist Prof. Dr. Barış Metin shared important information about the symptoms that indicate brain fog, his recommendations for prevention and treatment.

Not a disease in medical language

Stating that the concept of Brain Fog has become fashionable in popular culture, Neurology Specialist Prof. Dr. Barış Metin, “Brain fog is not a scientific or medical disease. We can call a problem that people perceive about their own mental functions, a name they give in a folk language. It does not indicate a disease in the medical literature, but as people perceive it and think there is a problem, it may actually be a symptom of another disease. It is necessary to think this way, ”he said.

Various ailments can arise from gold

We can define brain fog as a subjective feeling of a decrease in one's own mental functions. When people apply with this complaint, we try to detect whether there is another disease underlying them, and we conduct research. There are indeed various inconveniences. But the subjective perception of each person's decrease in his own mental ability does not mean a disease. Sometimes people have very high performance expectations from themselves. In such a situation, not meeting the high performance expectation can be perceived as an inconvenience.

These complaints describe brain fog!

"People usually come with complaints such as they can't concentrate as much as they used to, their minds don't work as well as they used to, their memory has lost their strength, they feel like they can't wake up from sleep, they feel like they can't think clearly," said Prof. Dr. Metin said, “This type of complaint defines brain fog. When we hear such complaints and our patients say that they have brain fog, we start to think about what it might be due to.”

May be an early sign of dementia

Stating that he could understand the reason when a brain disease specialist or psychiatrist talked to the person who came with the complaint of brain fog, Prof. Dr. Barış Metin said, “We say that brain fog is not a disease, but in its treatment, it is necessary to find the underlying discomfort of this complaint. The most common symptoms of this disorder are depression, anxiety disorders, sleep disorders. An early sign of dementia can also be brain fog. People with dementia can apply on their own, stating that they cannot think as well as they used to before their dementia turns into a disease. In summary, in the treatment of brain fog, the underlying disease is detected and a treatment is applied for it.

Sleep disorder causes brain fog

Stating that sleep disorders often cause brain fog, Metin said, “Especially our patients with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome apply with complaints such as not being able to concentrate during the day, not being able to pay attention to a subject for a long time. We can say that sleep apnea is most likely the reason why people over the age of 40, especially those with obesity, experience brain fog if they snore and stop breathing at night. Frequent dreaming also indicates that the quality of sleep is impaired. We dream every night, but we don't remember. The dreams we remember also mean that our sleep is interrupted, because we wake up at that time, we record the dream we saw in memory. People who dream frequently in this way usually have poor sleep quality. It could also be due to sleep apnea, depression, or another condition. These are all disorders associated with brain fog,” he said.

Supplements should be given if there is a lack of vitamins

What needs to be done to prevent brain fog is to provide a sleep pattern. If there is a sleep disorder, it should be treated. If there is a vitamin deficiency in terms of nutrition, treatment should be taken for it. Especially vitamins B1, B6, B12 are important for the healthy functioning of the brain. Regular exercise should be done, not a performance that tires the body. Walking for 20-30 minutes every day would be good exercise. Stress is a part of our life, but if there is excessive stress, intense anxiety, a feeling of not enjoying anything, it is necessary to seek support from a specialist because such disorders affect mental capacity.
