The development and reform committee of Zhejiang province in eastern China has approved the construction of the world's longest underwater railway tunnel.
According to Shanghai-based The Paper news portal, the Zhejiang Development and Reform Committee has approved the 16.2 km underwater railway tunnel project that will connect the mainland to Jintang Island. The tunnel will be part of the 76.4-kilometer railway project that will connect Ningbo city to Zhoushan city on the Zhongshan island team.
The trains on the line are planned to develop a speed of 250 kmh. The project, whose total cost will be approximately 4 billion dollars, is expected to be completed within 6 years.
The Zhongshan island team of Zhejiang province is very popular with tourists because of its well-equipped hotel infrastructure and clean beaches. Currently, it is only possible to reach the islands by bridges and air.
The implementation of the project will offer the Zhongshan island team the opportunity to start rail transport and reduce travel time. Currently, the journey from Ningbo city to Zhongshan takes 1.5 hours by car, and with the opening of the railway, this time will be reduced to 30 minutes.
