Mitsubishi Electric begins development of GOSAT-GW Satellite

Mitsubishi Electric Corporation announced that it has been selected by the Japanese Space Research Agency (JAXA) as the contractor of the World Greenhouse Gas and Water Cycle Observation Satellite (GOSAT-GW), the third in the GOSAT series, and has started development activities. Mitsubishi Electric aims to contribute to the prevention of natural disasters caused by global warming and climate change with the GOSAT-GW satellite, which will monitor greenhouse gases for the Ministry of Environment of Japan and the National Institute of Environmental Studies, and water cycle monitoring for JAXA. GOSAT-GW will take scientific and technological methods to the next level by providing a more precise forecast of climate change.

New sensors for precise monitoring of global greenhouse gas concentrations

GOSAT-GW has a sensor called the Total Anthropogenic and Natural Emission Mapper SpectrOmeter-3 (TANSO-3) for monitoring the concentration of greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide and methane over a wide area and at a high sensitivity for a more precise estimation of greenhouse gas emissions. . TANSO-3's global observation mode will seamlessly cover large areas of the world and provide more observation points than previous models. TANSO-2, which has a detailed observation mode with a spatial resolution three times higher than the previously launched GOSAT-2 ("Ibuki-3"), will enable greenhouse gases to be observed more precisely.

Increased geophysical quantity observation for better water cycle and meteorological monitoring

GOSAT-GW will be equipped with the new Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer 3 (AMSR3), which will estimate the geophysical quantities of water in the earth's land, sea surface and atmosphere. AMSR3; It will use more frequency bands than previous satellites for more accurate estimation of hydro-geophysical conditions such as precipitation, water vapor, sea ice and sea surface temperatures. Data from observations are expected to increase the forecast accuracy of meteorological organizations for typhoons, heavy rain and other climatic conditions. In addition, GOSAT-GW will provide detailed information for the assessment of the impacts of climate change on the water cycle, and will contribute to the efforts to determine the effects of climate change on daily life and prepare necessary countermeasures.
