Breast cancer is the second most common type of cancer in the world. It should not be forgotten that the most effective method to prevent breast cancer seen in 10 out of every 1 women in our country is early diagnosis, regular physician control and a healthy lifestyle.

Biruni University Hospital Nutrition and Dietetics Specialist Buse Özdemir gave information about foods and nutrition methods that are protective against breast cancer.

“The way to prevent breast cancer and other cancers is through a healthy diet and regular exercise. It should not be forgotten that the effect of eating habits in cancer formation varies between 30% and 70%.

Excess Weight is an Important Risk Factor

According to studies, being at a healthy weight significantly reduces the risk of breast cancer in women. It also significantly reduces the likelihood of cancer recurrence in individuals who have had the disease. Women who have entered menopause are overweight, which increases the risk of breast cancer. Therefore, being at the ideal weight is one of the most important factors that protect us from breast cancer.

Today, although successful and effective medical solutions have been developed in the fight against cancer, our most powerful weapon against cancer is to take precautions and protect. One of the biggest precautions that can be taken against cancer is a healthy and balanced diet. As with many other types of cancer, there is an important relationship between breast cancer and nutrition. Experts doing research on cancer disease state that the substances contained in some foods increase the risk of cancer, while some foods reduce it.

Avoid These Foods

The most important step we need to take against cancer is to stay away from carcinogenic food groups. According to research, these foods are known to contain high amounts of carcinogens.

These; processed foods, foods with added sugar, foods containing unhealthy fat, high-calorie foods, fried foods, fatty delicatessen products

In the treatment process, the goal is to keep the patient at a healthy weight and to stay at this weight.

Avoid breast cancer with these foods

Although it is not a protective food against cancer, it is thought that the food groups consumed regularly have a protective effect against cancer. After removing the risky foods that should be avoided from your diet, increasing the consumption of healthy food groups is effective in preventing breast cancer and other cancers. Food groups known to have a protective effect against breast cancer (and against a number of other types of cancer) are as follows:

Lycopene-containing foods; Rosehip, Pomegranate, Strawberry, Cherry, Tomato, Red pepper

Foods containing Omega 3; Seafood, Soybean, Cabbage, Purslane, Spinach, Walnut, Flaxseed, Chia seed

Brassica vegetables; Broccoli, Cabbage, Mustard, Cauliflower, Radish,

Bulbs, cereals, oil seeds; Garlic, onion Leek, whole grain foods, Walnuts, hazelnuts, oil seeds

Vegetables and fruits; Fruits and vegetables high in vitamin C

Nutritional rules we must follow to prevent cancer:

  • Fish should be consumed 2-3 times a week.
  • Red and processed meat consumption should be reduced.
  • You can drink 1-2 cups of green tea a day.
  • Foods containing selenium, vitamin C, vitamin E, turmeric, carotene and resveratrol should be consumed regularly.
  • Patients with breast cancer should not consume more than 1-3 servings of soy.
  • Legumes should be consumed at least 3 days a week.
  • Olive oil (preferably riviera) should be used as oil in meals.
  • Breast cancer patients should not use flax seeds without consulting a doctor. Regular consumption is not recommended.
  • The fat content of the diet of the patients should be at the level of 20%. For this, dietitian support should be obtained.
