As a result of three separate operations carried out at Istanbul Airport by the Customs Enforcement Team of the Ministry of Commerce, 18 kilograms of 215 grams of drugs were seized in passenger luggage.

In the first operation, risk analysis studies were carried out by the teams of the Istanbul Airport Customs Enforcement, Smuggling and Intelligence Directorate over the information systems used by the Ministry together with the Pre-Arrival Passenger Notification Program and Intelligence Information System. As a result of the studies, a foreign passenger traveling on the plane making the Tehran-Istanbul flight was followed up with suspicion of drug trafficking.

After the plane landed at Istanbul Airport, the suitcases on the plane were checked with the narcotic detector dog. When the detector dog reacted to the luggage of the suspect, the passenger was stopped while he was leaving the airport and his luggage was x-rayed. In the search made as a result of finding suspicious density in the suitcase, which passed through the X-ray scan, the substance was detected in 5 transparent bags hidden among the clothes. In the analysis of the sample taken from the substance in question with a drug test device, it was determined that it was a drug of the type of opium gum. In this operation, 6 kilograms and 215 grams of drugs were seized.

In the second and third consecutive operations, 2 kilograms of Khat plant was caught in the luggage of the foreign passenger, and a total of 10 kilograms of cannabis was caught in the luggage of another foreign passenger.

Investigations regarding operations are continuing.
