Public spaces of IMM; Another urban competition that it started to be accessible, free, lively, peaceful and safe places has been completed. After Bakırköy Square, Golden Horn Shores and Salacak, the competition announced for Taksim Square ended. In the contest where 146 applications were made, 3 design equivalent awards were won and 5 designs were given honorable mentions. The project to be implemented in Taksim will be determined from among the designs equivalent to the votes of the Istanbulites.

Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM) organizes a series of urban design competitions for the public open spaces of the city, adopting a participatory approach at every stage with the principle of “Istanbul is Yours”. Public spaces with the themed “Istanbul Becomes Its Public Spaces”; It is aimed to be democratic, social relations, lively, accessible, free, festive, peaceful and safe places. IMM creates the design and arrangement principles of public spaces by listening to the needs of stakeholders and Istanbulites and taking their opinions.

In this sense, IMM organized a design competition for Taksim Square, which is one of the meeting points of the city, in cooperation with the Istanbul Planning Agency and the IMM Department of Cultural Heritage. The Taksim Urban Design Competition, which was conducted, was concluded on 20 September 2020.

At the end of a preparation period of about six months, the competition, which was announced on 2 March 2020, covering Taksim Square, Gezi Park and its surroundings (approximately 160 thousand m2), was organized in two stages. The main jury of the competition was Zeynep Ahunbay, İpek Akpınar Aksugür, Arman Akdoğan, Can Kubin, Arzu Nuhoğlu, Kerem Piker, and Manuel de Rivero and Rainer Schmidt were among the foreign jury members.

WE DESIGN THE TAKSIM SQUARE TOGETHER

A total of 72 applications were submitted for the first stage of the competition, including 48 local, 26 foreign and 146 mixed teams. After the first stage, 20 teams that developed their projects in accordance with the recommendations of the jury were re-evaluated by the jury in the second stage. As a result of the evaluations, five of the projects were awarded honorable mentions and three were awarded with equivalent awards. Three equivalent projects; For the first, second and third ratings, it will be put to a referendum in the coming days. Istanbul residents who want to participate in the voting to be held under the control of the City Council will be able to participate with their TR Identity Number.
