Istanbul Meets Earthquake Parks

In the studies carried out to date, 39 assembly areas with a total size of 32 million square meters and a capacity of 21 million people have been identified for 859 districts. A total of 17 open and 2 closed temporary accommodation areas were determined. Earthquake parks will function as a pre-disaster education and cultural center, and after the disaster, in-park furniture, tents and food distribution areas will serve as temporary shelters.

Parks raise awareness in cities such as Istanbul that have to live with earthquake risk; is preparing the public for the aftermath of the disaster. Established in city centers, these parks offer citizens temporary shelter and emergency solutions in case of disasters. In normal times, it serves as green areas where people escape from the stress of the city. Experts state that earthquake parks not only reduce the effects of disasters but also provide resistance to people.

12 MEASUREMENTS IN LOCATION
A new model was created within the body of IMM Directorate of Urban Transformation for the selection of "Gathering and Temporary Housing Areas" throughout Istanbul. 12 criteria were determined with the contributions of experts. To make the city resistant to all kinds of disasters and risks; it was aimed to increase coping power. According to the new model created, 39 meeting areas with a total size of 32 million square meters and a capacity of 21 million people were determined for 859 districts. A total of 17 open and 2 closed temporary accommodation areas were determined. In the selection of the location, attention was paid to ensure that the size of the open area is at least 662 thousand square meters. The fields have been planned in a way that will provide short or medium term shelter for citizens after the disaster and support rescue efforts.

EARTHQUAKE HAS RECEIVED 20 THOUSAND LIVES IN THE LAST 750 YEARS
3 billion people in the world currently live in hazardous areas in terms of earthquake risk. Approximately 20 thousand people died as a result of earthquakes and natural disasters in the last 750 years. By 2050, the population in metropolitan cities at earthquake risk is expected to double.
