British Rail official company Network Rail will renew the electrification of the line between Preston and Carlisle on the west side of the UK. This massive £ 3,4 million business involves replacing fairly old electrical and catenary equipment.

Network Rail West Line Manager Phil James said: “This huge £ 3.4m investment of overhead line equipment is a significant upgrade to improve reliability for our passengers and train and freight operating companies on the West Coast mainline in Lancashire and Cumbria. After putting passengers first, we assembled a dedicated team to work early Sunday morning to remodel our overhead line equipment. This work, as part of the major northern railway project, will increase the credibility of the West Coast mainline to encourage tourists, vacationers, passengers and business people to return to the railway. ”

The work to be done without closing the existing line includes the following items:

  • Tension and balance equipment replacement
  • Worn catenary wire replacement
  • Drone detection of weathered areas
  • Insulation works
  • Equipment maintenance and changes in bridges and viaducts
  • Cable protection works
  • Transformer and maintenance works
