1915 Bridge, Turkey's Canakkale and Gallipoli Lapseki of the province is the suspension bridge being built between the districts. It will be the first suspension bridge of the Çanakkale Strait and the fifth in the Marmara Region. When completed, it will be part of the Kınalı-Tekirdağ-Çanakkale-Balıkesir Motorway, which is partly under construction. It will be the longest suspension bridge in the world with its 2.023 meters of middle span length.

History


The idea of ​​building a bridge over the Dardanelles Strait was first put forward between 1984-1989. A tender was held in 1994 for the bridge project, which came to the fore again in 1995. The firm, which won the tender to which 18 foreign companies participated, withdrew from the project, stating that the project was not feasible.

On March 3, 2016, the Minister of Transport, Maritime Affairs and Communications, Binali Yıldırım, announced that the name of the bridge would be Çanakkale 1915 Bridge. On Thursday, January 26, 2017, Daelim (South Korea) - Limak - SK (South Korea) - Yapı Merkezi OGG won the tender for the 1915 Çanakkale Bridge. With the completion of the tender process, it was announced that the groundwork would be laid on March 18, 2017. The foundations of Çanakkale 1915 Bridge were laid in Lapseki on March 18, 2017, with the participation of Prime Minister Binali Yıldırım, Minister of Transport, Maritime Affairs and Communications Ahmet Arslan, and South Korean Infrastructure and Transport Minister Ho-In Kang. On May 16, 2020, the towers of the bridge were completed.

The middle span of the bridge, where rubber wheeled vehicles can pass, will be 2.023 m, and the total length will be 3.563 m. With this medium span length, the bridge will cross the Akashi Kaikyō Bridge in Japan by 32 meters, making it the longest suspension bridge in the world. Its middle span has been determined as 100 meters in reference to the 2.023th anniversary of the republic. The tower height of the bridge, which has two steel towers, is 318 meters. The tower height was chosen to mean the eighteenth day of the third month in reference to the victory of the Çanakkale War on March 18, 1915.

Traffic

The bridge, which will be part of the Kınalı-Tekirdağ-Çanakkale-Balıkesir Motorway, will provide a connection between O-3 and O-7 in Silivri and O-5 in Balıkesir.

Latest Status on the Bridge

Currently, the construction of a total of 680 pieces of decks, each approximately 30 meters long, 17 meters wide and 4,5 meters high, continues on the 42 meters long approach viaduct on the Lapseki side. Each new deck will be delivered to the place where the viaduct meets the sea by pushing and sliding the other deck pieces in front of it. At the approach viaduct on the Lapseki side, the decks will reach the bridge support pillar in the sea by November. On the Gallipoli side, the same work is planned to begin in December.

On the 1915 Çanakkale Bridge, main cable laying works will begin at the end of summer. The construction of the 'Cat Road', which will be used as a working platform during the main cable pulling, which is one of the most important stages of the bridge project, will begin in late September. For the construction of the 'Cat Road', a guide rope will be pulled between the anchor blocks on the Asian and European sides for the first time next week. During the connection of the guide rope to the bridge towers in the sea, the Dardanelles Strait will be closed to transit ship crossings.
