Austria: Koralm Railway Tunnel Tender Result

Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) signed a contract with a joint venture of Porr Bau and Rhomberg Bahntechnik for the construction of the Koralm Railway Tunnel for 160 million EUR. Approximately 66 km of railway concrete track (slab track), walkways and ballasted for both tunnel entrance It includes the construction of access roads. The double-tube tunnel will connect the cities of Klagenfurt, Carinthia and Graz, Styria, and reduce the rail travel time between the two cities from three hours to 45 minutes now.

The Koralm Tunnel will provide sound and drop protection barriers for the eastern access road, adaptations to water conservancy facilities, road construction works, supply and installation of the overhead contact line, telecommunications infrastructure, ventilation systems and construction works on the East and West portals.

The project will be put into operation in 2025

Koralm will also be responsible for the production and operation of temporary construction works during the construction phase until it is commissioned in 2025. During the construction phase, the joint venture will be responsible for the overall coordination of construction logistics and field safety.

The work will begin in May 2021 and is scheduled to be completed by April 2023. Porr Bau will be the technical leader and Rhomberg Bahntechnik will be responsible for commercial management.
