İBB prepared “District Possible Earthquake Loss Estimate Booklets” for 39 districts. The booklets included information on components such as building damage, loss of life and injuries, infrastructure damage and temporary housing need to be experienced in a possible earthquake. In a possible earthquake, hundreds of thousands of buildings will be damaged in the middle and above, and in parallel, the need for temporary shelter will arise.

Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality continues its preparations against a possible Istanbul earthquake in the light of the experiences gained from the Düzce and Gölcük Earthquakes. Earthquake hazard and risks were reconsidered by using current scientific analysis methods, existing superstructure and infrastructure inventory information. In collaboration with the IMM and Boğaziçi University Kandilli Observatory Earthquake Research Institute, "Project for Updating the Prospect of Earthquake Loss Estimates in Istanbul-2019"

A report was prepared for each district

Earthquake Risk Management and Urban Development Department Earthquake and Ground Investigation Directorate privatized the outputs of this Project. “District Possible Earthquake Loss Estimation Booklets” were produced for 39 districts of Istanbul by making analyzes and mappings specific to the districts. In a possible earthquake, components such as building damage, potential loss of life and injuries, infrastructure damage and temporary housing need in the districts and neighborhoods were analyzed and reported.

Problems specific to each district were identified

Thanks to the study, specific problems were identified for each district. The extent of the damages and losses that a destructive earthquake that may be effective throughout Istanbul can cause in the districts were revealed. These data constituted an important basis to guide implementation and planning studies such as disaster management, urban planning, structural improvement against earthquake and urban transformation.

In the booklets, general information about the districts as well as building, infrastructure and population information; probable number of damaged buildings, probable loss of life and number of casualties and their spatial distribution calculated based on strong ground motion parameters calculated as a result of analysis and scenario earthquakes; Information on possible damages and temporary sheltering needs in natural gas, drinking water and wastewater networks were included.

Booklets were made public on the website
