Didi Chuxing (DiDi), one of the leading vehicle service companies in China, started autonomous / driverless vehicle service trials on the route set in Shanghai on Saturday, June 27.

Users who have previously registered through the DiDi app can book an autonomous vehicle for sightseeing on the 53,6-kilometer cruise route in the city's Jiading district.

According to the statement made by DiDi, there are also security personnel inside the driverless vehicles to get behind the wheel if necessary. The company also created a security center to monitor vehicles remotely and assist remotely as needed.

The company's technical director, Zhang Bo, stated that the company will serve both autonomous vehicles of this type and those with drivers, since the driverless vehicles can only operate in the designated areas.

Zhang explained that the use of autonomous vehicles should go beyond an experiment, but it is not adequately available for the benefit of the wider public due to the limited space currently allocated to such vehicles.

The Jiading region had already launched a pilot for smart vehicles in 2016. Currently, the 53,6 km long section where smart cars are tested is all covered by 5G technology.
