During the Second World War, German National Railways were used to force Jews and other Holocaust (genocide) victims into the Treblinka and Auschwitz concentration camps, where six thousand people from the Nazi ghettoes were systematically killed.
The exiled Jewish people died of hunger and thirst in the trains they were compressed before they came to concentration camps. Genocide did not happen on such a terrible scale before the Nazis started using the railways. "If you want me to speed things up, I need more trains," Heinrich Himmler, the architect of the genocide, wrote to the Nazi transport minister in January 1943.
