The General Directorate of State Airports Authority has announced airport statistics for the period of March 2020.

The aviation industry, which had a hard time due to the corona virus outbreak that affected the world, was also reflected in the figures.

While the number of aircraft, passengers and cargo arriving at the airports decreased, the picture is expected to get worse due to domestic and international flights canceled in April.

According to the General Directorate of State Airports Administration data, in the first three months of the year to the end of March from 56 airports in Turkey were a total of 286 thousand 943 times. Compared to the same month of the previous year, air traffic decreased by 8.8 percent.

When we look at the number of passengers, while using 1 million 31 passengers between 33 January and 554 March, an 18.8 percent decrease was observed compared to the same period of the previous year. While the number of domestic passengers contracted by 20.9 percent, the drop on the international line remained at 15.7 percent.

In January, 13 million 930 thousand, 12 million 275 thousand in February, while 7 million 347 thousand passengers used the airports in Turkey in March. It was noteworthy that the number of passengers decreased by almost 40 percent in March compared to February.

THE MOST REGRESSION IS AT ISPARTA

Compared to the same period of the previous year, the biggest decrease in passenger traffic was seen at Isparta Süleyman Demirel Airport with 55 percent, Erzurum with 38 percent and Antalya Zafer Airport with 36 percent ranked third. While the number of passengers decreased by 12 percent at Istanbul Sabiha Gökçen Airport, this figure was 28 percent in Ankara Esenboğa.

3 MILLION DIFFERENCE

Since the Istanbul Airport has not started its activities in the same period last year, the number of passengers could not be compared. As of March 2020, 12.2 million people have used Istanbul Airport since the beginning of the year. Ataturk Airport, which was closed down, hosted 15.2 million passengers in the same period last year.

COMMERCIAL AIRCRAFT TRAFFIC

Turkey in the first three months of 2020 freight carried by the airports in general compared to the same period of the previous year, a decrease of 9.3 percent.

In the January-March period, a total of 739 thousand 850 tons of cargo traffic, including luggage, cargo and mail, was realized. Commercial aircraft traffic, on the other hand, remained at 15.4 thousand 234, a decrease of 136 percent during the period in question.
