The news produced that IMM has reduced public transportation services do not reflect the truth. Although the number of passengers decreased by 90 percent, the number of trips was reduced by only 20 percent. Within the scope of the coronavirus measures, bus and metrobus services in Istanbul were planned to maintain social distance. In cases where the number of passengers exceeds 50 percent of the vehicle capacity, the drivers were instructed not to pick up passengers and to send replacement vehicles.
IETT General Directorate, one of the affiliated companies of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM), continues to provide uninterrupted service on a total of 814 lines in coordination with the IMM Transportation Coordination Center. Bus interiors and metrobus stations are constantly monitored by cameras.
In these lines, approximately 5 IETT, OTOBÜS AŞ and Private Public Bus (ÖHO) vehicles serve. All of the vehicles are kept ready for service. Depending on the need, approximately 697 percent of the buses are given to the service. During non-passenger hours, vehicles are taken to the garage area for refueling, maintenance, cleaning and intermediate disinfection.
Since schools were closed in Istanbul and flights were canceled, only flights on school and airport lines were removed.
METROBUS SERVES WITH 500 VEHICLES
After the first new type of Coronavirus incident in our country on the Metrobus line on March 11, the journeys dropped to 90 percent. Despite this, IETT currently provides service with 553 buses on the 500 metrobus lines, which can operate at maximum.
When the average of travel changes and trips per trip is examined in buses and metrobuses, it is seen that the average number of trips per trip does not exceed 25.
MEASURES HAVE BEEN TAKEN TO PREVENT TROUBLESHOOTING
In this process, IMM took the following precautions in order to avoid problems during the journey:
- The passenger density was monitored instantaneously, and the number of trips was planned so as not to exceed 50 percent of the vehicles' capacity. Additional flights are organized by IETT and Private Public buses to mix the momentary demands.
- In order to prevent the partial intensity experienced in buses to work and back home, 100 spare vehicles were planned, excluding scheduled flights.
- Mobile fleet tracking tools were put into service to ensure sustainability of fleet management. Fleet management is controlled 7/24 by IETT, Private Transportation and Metrobus system with remote operation system.
- In cases where the number of passengers exceeds 50 percent of the vehicle capacity, the drivers were instructed not to pick up passengers and call the control center to send a replacement vehicle to the expected stop.
