While the number of passengers carried by trains increased by 10 percent last year, the cargo carried by railways was 29.3 million tons.
Thanks to new lines and new investments in railways, there has been a record increase in passenger and freight transport. With high speed trains (YHT) operated by the General Directorate of TCDD Transportation, demand for mainline, regional and urban trains increased. Transport and Infrastructure Minister Cahit Turhan said, "The number of passengers carried by conventional trains rose to 2018 million in 16, an increase of 2019 percent in 10," he said.
Minister Turhan said that the highest figures of all time were also caught in cargo transportation last year. Stating that they attach great importance to the Baku-Tbilisi Kars (BTK) railway line, Turhan pointed out that the first transit train, which completed the 11 kilometers road from China to Europe in 500 days, was an important milestone in the history of this line. Turhan stated that the international railway corridor, which is integrated with BTK iron and is defined as the 'Middle Corridor', stands out as the shortest, most economical, most favorable climate corridor between Asia and Europe.
Minister Turhan said: “The Middle Corridor starts from our country, extends to Georgia, Azerbaijan and the Caspian Sea (using the Caspian crossing), followed by the Kazakhstan or Turkmenistan-Uzbekistan-Kyrgyzstan route.
