Atkins, a LNC-Lavalin group subsidiary, signed a contract to provide detailed design and construction support for the 300km Varberg tunnel in Sweden as part of the project to double the 3.1km West Coast Line between Gothenburg and Lund.

The new 3.1km tunnel, the coastline of Varberg, will work to expand the West Coast Line to a dual-track railway that will increase capacity for passenger and transport services and reduce travel times. Phase 1 of the project, including the development of the implementation plan, completed the design. The next stage includes detailed planning for the construction of the new tunnel and the first £ 13 million material contract.

The expansion of the railway has been underway since 2015, and approximately 85 percent of the West Coast Line has been upgraded. The project, managed by the Swedish Transport Authority and the Swiss construction company Implenia, is expected to be completed in 2025.

Atkins Sweden CEO Johannes Erlandsson said, “The Varberg tunnel and line expansion will connect towns, cities, businesses and communities to benefit the entire west coast of Sweden.” “Atkins is working on a number of railway projects, including the 250km East Link Project, a 160km / h high-speed line from Järna to Linköping in Sweden; The city of Hallsberg; Electrical direct connection to Gavle port and electrification of the port line from the cargo yard to the new train station and the expansion of the Railway from Tomteboda and Kallhäll to two lines in Stockholm.
