Preparations for ENGELSİZMİR 2020 Congress are in progress. Within the scope of congress preparations, bugün Garden Therapy and Local Governments Workshop bugün was held today.

Preparations are continuing for the fourth of the ENGELSİZMİR Congress, which will be organized by İzmir Metropolitan Municipality to raise awareness about individuals with special needs, to facilitate their access to public services and to produce solutions to their problems. Within the scope of the congress that will be held between 19-21 November with the theme of “Access to Public Services”, “Garden Therapy and Local Administrations Workshop” was organized today.

Speaking at the opening speech of the workshop at the Historic Air Gas Factory, Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Deputy Mayor Mustafa Özuslu said that the Izmir Metropolitan Municipality is working to protect the rights of all social groups, especially children, the elderly, women, the disabled and disadvantaged groups. Özuslu continued: “The 'Garden Therapy' method will be one of these studies. We sincerely believe that the results that will be revealed by the opinions of the precious experts attending the workshop will guide us. We can manage to implement the 'Garden Therapy' method in İzmir. ”

It will be an example to Turkey

Expressing that they have implemented important projects that will facilitate the lives of disabled people after each congress, Assoc. Dr. Levent Köstem, saying that “Garden Therapy” method stands out in the interim meetings held for this year's congress preparations, “If we bring a beautiful therapy park to İzmir, we will set an example for this city and the country. I would like to thank the Izmir Metropolitan Municipality, which supported us, and our district spouses, especially Neptün Soyer, who are active members of the congress board, ”.

Izmir is the most suitable city

Dokuz Eylul University Faculty of Education Special Education Department Professor. Dr. Sunay Yıldırım Doğru said that İzmir is one of the most suitable cities for “Garden Therapy” and must be applied in the city. Reminding that Çiğli Municipality established a health garden in 2006 with the support of Izmir Metropolitan Municipality, Doğru said that the “Garden Therapy” project will add a new dimension to the work of the Izmir Metropolitan Municipality on the disabled.

Dr. Aysel Uslu gave examples from abroad about the design of “Garden Therapy” areas and the design of urban green spaces suitable for disabled people. Uslu stressed that the design should take into account the healing effect of green spaces.

Saying that the old airport in Berlin has turned into a public community garden, Christa Ringkamp of the Hortec Berlin Association of Germany said, “The more people live in green spaces, the better their psychology. "Garden therapies" are very important in dealing with stress and preventing burnout syndrome. " Rebecca Haller from the American Horticulture Therapy Institute talked about the treatment method applied in the therapy gardens and the benefits to the patients. Haller stated that they also used the therapy gardens for vocational purposes.

After the speeches, workshops were held with the help of experts from abroad and in Turkey.
