İzmir Metropolitan Municipality opened a design competition for the natural heritage of Meles River and its immediate surroundings.

Izmir Metropolitan Municipality opened a design competition for Meles River and Yesildere Valley, which lost their natural qualities significantly due to urbanization. The aim of the competition is to obtain original, qualified ideas where the Meles River and the Yesildere Valley are considered as ecological and urban backbone and strategies of urban vision that are resistant to the effects of the climate crisis.

Applications for "Meles Stream as Urban and Ecological Backbone National Urban Design Idea Project Competition" will end on May 13, 2020. The jury will meet on 30 May 2020 and the results will be announced on 8 June 2020.

Ecological corridor will

Aiming to increase the presence of green spaces in the city, İzmir Metropolitan Municipality aims to make Meles River and its surroundings as the ecological backbone of the city as the priority action plan of İzmir Green Infrastructure Strategy. In this way, a new step will be taken for the goal of green corridors in Orman İzmir Campaign. The project will have a critical function in revealing values ​​such as Kervan Bridge, Kızılçullu Aqueducts and Halkapınar Lake.

Who's on the jury?

The jury is chaired by Architect and Urban Designer. Biological and Sustainable Expert Ferdi Akarsu, Architect Assoc. Dr. Deniz Aslan, Landscape Architect Sunay Erdem, Landscape Architect and Environmental Designer Dr. Hayriye Eşbah Tunçay, Architect Dr. Arda İnceoğlu and City Planner Assoc. Dr. Koray is composed of Velibeyoğlu.

The advisory jury members are City Planner, Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Deputy Secretary General Eser Atak, Geological Engineer Prof.Dr. Dr. Alper Baba, IZSU Deputy General Manager Onur Demirci, City Planner, Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Head of Zoning and Urbanization Department Zeliha Demirel, Architect Prof.. 18 kilometers long

Meles Stream and Yeşildere Valley, which constitute the main backbone of the 400 hectare competition area, start from Adnan Menderes Airport in the south and connect to İzmir Bay from the Alsancak Port in the north and form a corridor of approximately 18 kilometers.
