High Quality Air Breathing in Istanbul Metro; Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality has started work to improve air quality in accordance with the national legislation in the subways. Samples will be collected from the vehicle, platform and ticket hall and the data will be analyzed. The results will be examined and the particles will be destroyed at the source. PM 10 values in the subways will be lowered.

Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM) started work to improve the air quality in the subways where more than 2 million Istanbul citizens travel every day. In the project, which is carried out jointly by Metro Istanbul AŞ, one of the İBB affiliates, and the IMM Directorate of Environmental Protection, data will be collected with the Particulate Matter Sampling Device. The collected samples will be examined and the source of the particles will be determined and destroyed on site.

RESULTS WILL BE SHARED WITH ISTANBUL PEOPLE

Metro Istanbul Energy and Environmental Management Chief Ismail Adiyah, metrics are made at regular intervals in the metrics and 80 cubic meters flow per second through the fans of the dirty air is evacuated, gave the following information about the work:

“We will make world class measurements. We will determine the quality of the air in the subways. We will then work on improvement methods. We will focus on the elimination or reduction of dust and particles at the source. However, our goal is to make the breathing air more sterile. ”

Emphasizing the importance of using high-standard measuring instruments to obtain scientific data on air quality, Adyıl emphasized that reliable data cannot be obtained from simple devices. Adıyıl,  Uz We want to get healthy results and to convey the results in a transparent way to our people by working with fully qualified people, receiving support from the universities and the engineers in IMM Directorate of Environmental Protection. Our goal is to further improve air quality. ”

EXPERTS WILL ANALYZE THE AIR

Bahar Tüncel, Environmental Engineer at the Directorate of Environmental Protection of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality, stated that they are measuring pollutants such as particulate matter, carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxide and ozone at different stations in 26 and said:

“Yenikapı-Hacıosman (M2) and Kadıköy-Tavşantepe (M4) lines will be measured at 10 stations determined in 6-day periods. We aim to determine the air quality values that the people who use and use the subway breathe. We want to carry these values far above the standards specified in our national legislation, air quality assessment and management regulation. We will carry out improvement studies according to the analysis results. ”

Tuncel clarified the data collection principle of the Particulate Matter Sampling Device and stated that it has the ability to draw very fine dust samples by drawing 2,3 cubic meters of air per hour from the chimney section and stated that they would have the opportunity to detect the particles with automatic analyzers and collect samples on the filter during the period. Cel After one day of measurement, filters will change automatically. Then the element analysis of the collected samples will be done. We will determine the quality of the air, determine the source of the pollutants and make improvements. ”

WHAT IS PM10?

Particulate substances contain heavy metals such as mercury, lead, cadmium and carcinogenic chemicals and carry a risk for human health.  These toxic chemicals combine with moisture and turn into acid. Since soot, fly ash, gasoline and diesel vehicle exhaust particles contain harmful substances such as coal tar component, their long-term inhalation can cause significant diseases.

More than 10 microns of PM are kept in the nose. 10-1 micron diameters pass through the capillary vessels, while smaller than 2 microns accumulate by reaching the lungs and bronchi through the respiratory tract, while those of the 0,1 micron diameter can be transported from the capillary to the blood.
