The Ministry of Transport announced the strategic plan of Kanal Istanbul, which scientists call it a "demolition project".
It is stated that 75 percent of the project, which is announced to be built with a cost of 60 billion TL, is planned to be completed by 2023. It is said that if the channel, whose length will be 40 kilometers, width 150 meters and depth 25 meters deep, the Bosphorus will be closed to tanker traffic.
With the completion of the project, two new peninsulas and one new island will be created in Istanbul. The new residential area to be established around Kanal Istanbul will cover 453 million square meters.
According to the plan detailing the part of the project until 2023, the first year of the project will be spent in preparation. 10 percent in the second year, 20 percent in the third year, 30 percent in the fourth year and 60 percent in the fifth year.
TMMOB previously stated that it should be canceled immediately from the project. Dr. Naci Görür explained that the risk of earthquakes will increase with Kanal Istanbul. Görür from his social media account, “Istanbul is waiting for an earthquake. If the expected earthquake occurs, the mouth of the Canal in Marmara can be affected at 9-10 severity. It is possible that a building with zero tolerance to horizontal and vertical movement, such as a channel, could suffer serious damage from the earthquake. ”
