In the EIA Report prepared by the Ministry of Transport, this water loss is planned to be compensated with water from the Melen Dam. In the report, it was emphasized that Sazlıdere Dam, which will be canceled due to the Canal Istanbul Project, will lose 30 million cubic meters of water annually, with an annual loss of 2.7 million cubic meters and 32,7 million cubic meters of water due to the loss in Lake Terkos.
This water loss; It is stated that it will be met by Melen Project, which is being built in stages and will provide Istanbul with 1.08 billion cubic meters of water annually. The Melen project “hoped” in the report has been a polemic issue for a while.

KANAL GOES THROUGH THE DAM
In the EIA report, it was stated that the project passed through the Sazlıdere Dam, which is used for drinking water supply.
It is stated that 49 percent of the dam, which provides an average of 60 million cubic meters of drinking water annually, that is, approximately 30 million cubic meters of the dam, will be disabled due to the construction of Kanal Istanbul.
In order not to damage the Historic Damascus Bend, it was told that a new dam to be made to the source of the existing historical dam could continue to use 40 percent of the waters coming from the left coast to the Sazlıdere Basin.
In the report, it was noted that with the construction of the Kanal Istanbul Project, 30 million cubic meters of water can not be transferred from Sazlıdere Basin to Istanbul annually, and the use of the new dam will continue to use 19 million cubic meters of water in the basin.
TERKOS BASIN WILL BE DIVIDED: 2.7 MILLION LOSS
In the last part of the canal route, it was stated that Terkos Lake will enter 5.4 km in the middle range protection area and 2.7 percent of the basin will leave Terkos. In this section, it was stated that there was a 0.8 percent loss of basin due to the Istanbul New Airport, the construction of which has already started. It was emphasized that the loss of basin will be 1.9 percent due to the channel, which means that approximately 2.7 million cubic meters of water per year cannot be used. Thus, with the cancellation of Sazlıdere Dam, Istanbul's water loss will be 32.7 million cubic meters.
