The first railway, which was a Persian, was opened in 1888 between Tehran and the temple of Shah-Abdol-Azim in Rey. The 800km line, built on a 9mm meter, was mostly intended for pilgrims, although several quarry branches were added later. Finally the horse was drawn, then converted for steam transplant. It continued its activities until 1952. The original route is now parallel to line 1 of the Tehran metro.
In the development of the railroad in 1914, from the time of the construction of a 146 km railway extending from Tabriz to Jolfa, there was a long break between them, as well as Azerbaijan, as part of Russia. It was built according to the standard (1435 mm) meter like the following railways in the country. However, II. With the eruption of World War II, the total rail network was less than 700 kilometers.
The war time of the Trans-Iranian Railroad nearly tripled this figure, and subsequent developments led to a standard measuring network under construction or planned today, more than 10000km. Turkey and therefore have an international connection to the rest of Europe (albeit with Lake Van and train ferries on the Bosphorus). In the Caucasus, there was an international link, which included the indication of Naxchivan's settlement in Azerbaijan and beyond, Armenia and Russia; however, this is currently unavailable. A new international link with Azerbaijan was proposed on the shore of the Caspian Sea, near the Astara border town. This existing network would be connected to Qazvin by a new rail.
An international connection with Turkmenistan in Sarakhs also included a change of dimension opened in 1996. This was envisioned as part of a potential for China, although the political tensions between Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan mean that this road could not be realized. Another link with Turkmenistan in Incheh Borun was opened in 2013 as part of a route plan to Kazakhstan. There is also a short Russian (1520mm) measuring line from Turkmenistan that serves the facility on the Loftabad border, but this has no direct connection to the rest of the Iranian network.
A new line for Zahedan was completed in 2009. This provides an intersection with the 84km line that was previously isolated on the border with Pakistan in Zahedan. The second line is connected with the Pakistan Railroad network and is built to the size of 1675 mm of that system.
In 2013, a short (16km) but important line opened between Khorramshahr (near Abadan) and Shalamcheh on the Iraqi border. Although the work on the Iraqi side of the border continues, it will eventually connect to the Iraqi railway network near Basra.
In 2015, construction began on a new line near the Iraqi border between the capital Tehran and Khosravi. The line was opened until Kermanshah in 2018. The remaining 263 km to Khosravi is expected to be completed in 2020.
A line between Mashhad and Afghanistan is under construction. The Iranian section up to the Afghan border near Khvaf has been completed; Work on the railway in Afghanistan continues and the cross-border connection that started in 2016 has started.
In 2017, a new international link was opened between Astara and the city of the same name in Azerbaijan. It is a dual (1520mm and 1435mm) tuned rail and will be linked to the rest of the Iranian network with a new line that is finally under construction.
