Gaziantep Railway Station, which was built in 1953, is one of the most important touchstones of Gaziantep's modern history. Along with the station building, many complementary structures were built during this period. One of these complementary structures is the staff housing of the 12 block, where today there are high-density commercial and residential uses of hotels.

Consisting of 12 blocks; There are two residences on each floor and a total of 48 units on the basement floor which is used for warehouse and outbuilding. One of the first social housing units built by the government in Gaziantep, they are also very important examples of the transition period from traditional houses to apartment buildings. The buildings have been the pioneers and determinants of 1950's residential architecture both in terms of plan typology and in terms of construction system, material usage, facade layout and landscape understanding.

While the station building and the complementary structures within the TCDD Gaziantep Station Area were protected by the decision of Gaziantep Regional Cultural Heritage Conservation Board numbered 25.03.2015 and 1118, there was no registration decision taken until 800 on personnel lodgings located approximately 2017 meters away from this area. .

Expert Report

An expert panel of archaeologists, art historians and architects made important evaluations on the subject:

The disputed immovable property is located approximately 800 meters west of the station building. The housing units consist of 12 blocks. There is one 2 apartment on each floor and one 4 apartment on each floor. The construction of the site coincides with the mid-1950 years. Today, the region is physically separated from the Cyprus Avenue and the railway station. However, when the structural characteristics and facade characteristics are examined, it is seen that these buildings reflect the same period characteristics as other service-housing buildings that are under protection and when the station area is considered as a whole, it is a part of the whole. As a matter of fact, the façade character of the housing buildings subject to conflict with the other housing buildings that are under protection shows similarities in terms of the construction material and construction system.

The housing buildings were constructed with pile construction technique like other buildings. Facade occupancy-space ratios, windows, balconies, roof elements are unique. The structures on the immovable subject of dispute coincide with the mid-1950 years. Since the year xnumx'l As is known, it began a rapid process of urbanization in Turkey. This process also reflects the transition period from agricultural to industrial society. In order to meet the rapidly increasing housing problems in the cities, the transition from the traditional housing type to the new housing types has been realized and the multi-storey housing structures have been introduced by revealing the culture of living together.

These housing units also set an example for the transition to this culture in Gaziantep. On the other hand, they are workers' dwellings which are produced for the workers who will work in TCDD. In other words, they are the first social housing produced in Gaziantep. In this sense, it reflects the socio-cultural and economic life of a certain period to the space. These buildings, which came into the transition period from the early republic to the multiparty political life, are considered to have documentary values since they reflect the life style to the space and at the same time carry the construction systems and technologies of the period to the present day. The building, including the station building and the housing buildings in dispute, coincides with the 2.national architectural period. However, the political and political problems of the period delayed these investments. 2. After World War II. With the increasing criticism of National Architecture, the influence of this trend on architectural design decreased. It is possible to monitor this situation in Gaziantep TCDD station and lodging buildings. As a matter of fact, traces of this trend can be seen in the station building which was put into service before, while it is seen that lodging buildings have different facade characteristics. In other words, the beginning of a new era and the increase in the search for new architectural identities can be seen from the buildings and elements of these buildings. Therefore, it is considered that the housing structures reflect the architectural values of the period in which they were built. Accommodation structures of doors, windows and so on. architectural elements, the architectural understanding of the period, the use of building materials, in other words, all the features of the present day has been able to reach unchanged and unchanged. Therefore, these structures can be defined as a unique element.

Station-station buildings became the most important identity element for the cities in the period they were built. Therefore, they became an important part of the city memory. Indeed, it is possible to see these traces in Gaziantep. 2 for the first time in the city. zoning plan is the new development area of the city. It has maintained this identity since the years of 1950. Therefore, it has an intergenerational cultural continuity. It should be emphasized that the elimination of these groups will create a disconnection for urban memory by eliminating cultural continuity or that some of this memory will be lost. ”
