Around a hundred solar panels power the line lights and the signaling system near the city of Aldershot in Hampshire. This successful project seems to be available throughout the country if it continues to grow.

Some of the train stations in the UK were already powered by solar panels. Network Rail, which manages most of the UK's railway infrastructures, has set aside billions of money to provide energy to railway lines in this way. If the pilot project is successful, the company plans to do this electrification through solar energy. In addition, the UK Government wants to stop diesel use on railways until 2040.

According to interviews given by the names behind the solar project, the energy generated can meet the 20 of Liverpool Merseyrail network, as well as the energy of solar powered trains in Edinburgh, Glasgow, Nottingham, London and Manchester, as well as suburbs in Kent, Sussex and Wessex. In addition to being green energy, solar energy can be less expensive than electricity, thus reducing the costs of railways.

England is not the first country with solar powered trains. More than 250 in India, it carries solar panels on the roofs of the train and supplies energy from there. India plans to build new solar panel farms and India Railways is aiming to build a fully green energy-powered rail network. Moreover, it intends to achieve this goal within ten years.
