Izmir Metropolitan Municipality has taken action for the new project that will reveal its models with its optimistic and pessimistic climate scenarios from 2050 and 2100. Environmental Scientist Nuran Talu stated that they are closely examining Izmir Metropolitan Municipality's projects to combat intense climate change, “Neither Ankara nor Istanbul has an action plan for climate change. Taking important steps for “a greener İzmir”, the Metropolitan Municipality has started a new application that will shape the future of the city. The “A Framework for Resilient Cities: Green Focused Adaptation” project, initiated in collaboration with the Landscape Research Association, was first explained to the members of the Metropolitan council and Municipal staff in the relevant commissions. With this project, which is carried out with the aim of determining the green area future of İzmir and drawing the road map by considering climate change, Metropolitan Municipality will reveal its models with “optimistic and pessimistic” climate scenarios belonging to 2050 and 2100 on the other hand. . Project results will be shared with the public next month.
Rail system investments reduce carbon emissions
Making the opening speech of the meeting, Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Secretary General Dr. Buğra Gökçe emphasized the importance of minimizing the effects of climate change, saying, “Today there is a problem called climate change and global warming. It is not possible for us to treat without accepting the problem. It is also not possible to explain the recent weather events as small meteorological events. ”
Taking a step towards reducing carbon emissions among major cities in Turkey, the only local authorities indicating that the İzmir Metropolitan Municipality Dr. Gokce, said:
“There is a municipality in Izmir that has been aware of the reality of environmental problems for a long time and it is developing its investments as an environmentalist. Izmir Metropolitan Municipality is exploring nature-based solutions, taking important steps to switch from rubber wheels to electric and rail systems in public transportation. We will produce biogas in Harmandalı
Secretary General Buğra Gökçe continued as follows: “İzmir Metropolitan Municipality implemented the most comprehensive Intelligent Traffic System in the country under the name of İZUM. This is one of the works aiming to reduce 2020 thousand tons of carbon emission by 251, with its system that collects the waiting and transition rates at intersections as much as possible. With our moves in maritime transportation, our new carbon composite, environmentally friendly new 15 passenger and 3-car ferry is floating in the bay. It consumes much less fuel than previous ships. Moreover, every vehicle stolen by sea and rail transportation from rubber wheel transportation reduces the carbon emission a little more. Our green-engine, low-floor buses are active and we are trying to renew all of our buses in this way. A fleet of 20 electric buses as transportation within the city as a first in Turkey is using active. So far, the electric bus has carried 5 million passengers, preventing 780 thousand liters of diesel fuel. 81 percent savings per kilometer were achieved compared to diesel vehicles. Thus, 2 thousand 103 tons of carbon emissions were prevented. To provide the energy of these buses, the roof of ESHOT's workshops in Gediz was covered with solar panels. We also get our energy from the sun. Similarly, we continue our projects that will use solar energy and roofs more actively in our other facilities. Tahtalı Dam is one of the most important basins used as the water basin of the country and İZSU General Directorate has planted 640 million 1 thousand saplings in an area of 75 hectares to protect this basin. Izmir Metropolitan Municipality does not sign a decision that will allow construction in any way in this basin. ”
Stating that the problem of space has not been overcome for a long time in the establishment of solid waste recycling facilities equipped with state-of-the-art technology, Gökçe also touched on Harmandalı Landfill, which is a political polemic subject, saying, “There is no wild storage area in İzmir. Turkey's first landfill dumpsites in the Harmandalı is larger dumpsites in Istanbul because of a similar nature. Now we are carrying out a major rehabilitation project in Harmandalı. We came to an end in the construction of a biogas plant with a 15 MW power generation capacity. We will produce energy at this facility soon. After that, we will systematize this region systematically. But our main job is the Solid Waste Recycling and Biogas Plant, where we expect the permit processes for its construction. ”
