Minister of Transport and Infrastructure, M. Cahit Turhan, attended the ceremony for the recruitment of Snow Fighting and Maintenance Vehicles in 2018 by the General Directorate of Highways.
Turhan, who made the opening speech of the program, stated that the highways constitute the backbone of the transportation network. 88 per cent of the passenger transport in Turkey, while the freight Turhan said that with 90 percent of highways, roads voiced transport is also complementary to other forms of transport. We have a transportation network that keeps life and property safety at the highest level, complies with international standards and encompasses all over our country. On the one hand, we have increased the physical and geometric standards in our state and provincial roads that provide access to every corner of our country. On the other hand, we increased the level of service and traffic safety by installing smart transportation systems. In addition, we strengthened the national and international corridors of our country with our works on the highways and divided roads, which we attach special importance to. As a result, our citizens' lives have become easier, accidents have decreased, travel distance and duration have been shortened. We have won people, our country, our future, ”he said.

Turhan underlined that KGM's machine park is equally important as well as strengthening road networks. Turhan said that, besides maintenance and repair services, a strong machine park is needed for keeping the roads open 7/24, search and rescue operations and struggling with difficult winter conditions, KGM has a rich infrastructure and qualified staff. Sharing that the machine park is strengthened every year by taking into consideration the changing conditions, needs and technology, Turhan said, “Currently, there are 5 thousand 12 machines and equipment in our machinery park. We have included 161 thousand of them in our machinery park this year. With our purchases in the last 47 years, we have renewed 3 percent of our machinery park. We also pay special attention to local production in the formation of our machinery park. As a matter of fact, 25 percent of our supply this year is domestic manufacturing. Our General Directorate has made all preparations for the harsh winter conditions. In our 55-kilometer road network across the country, we will have a winter struggle with our 67 snow fight centers, 898 thousand 422 machines and equipment, 8 thousand tons of salt, 778 thousand 400 tons of de-icers, 2 thousand tons of aggregates and 800 thousand 382 employees. Of course, besides all these, great duties fall on drivers. In addition to obeying traffic rules, using winter tires in vehicles during winter months is indispensable for life and property safety.
