The stage of Üsküdar – Sancaktepe (M5), Turkey's first driverless metro, to Çekmeköy has been open for a month. The M5 was named the best driverless metro in Europe by the International Public Transport Association. It ranks third in the world. So how does the M5 work? Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM) Rail System Department employees told SABAH. Here are the details:

  • The SIL10 system, which is accepted as the world's safest signaling system certificate, is used in the subway, where the error is reduced to 1 in 4 million. The train has 2 computerized signaling systems.
  • All movements of the train are transferred to the control center, where the signaling system is monitored 7 hours a day, 24 days a week.
  • There are 2 control centers established in the Çarşı Station and the Warehouse area. The system does not allow any human error.
  • Follow-up with 100 cameras
  • Even during the hours when the metro is not working, there are officers in charge of the system in the control center.
  • The first metro is getting ready for departure at 4.30. It starts working with a mouse movement.
  • Everything is redundant in the subway, in case of failure. There are 3 energy supply stations. It works with huge lines even if the power generator in the storage area in Turkey.
  • An empty train is waiting between the bazaar and the Yamanevler station.
  • It uses Platform Separator Door System (PAKS) in the subway. It is very important for security.
  • There is an Istanbul Metro officer on the train for now.
  • The metro line is constantly monitored with a thousand cameras. Images are recorded for at least 15 days.

Hüseyin Boztürk, one of the passengers, said, “The M5 is a blessing for us. We use it without fear and with peace of mind.” In Thai Arham Eta, “I know that this line is controlled 24 hours a day. I find it safer than other subways because it eliminates driver errors,” he said. – Source: MORNING
